Barna Named SoCon Player of the Month for February

DAVIDSON, N.C. – Earning the first league honor of the season and just the program's second, freshman third baseman Andrew Barna has been named Southern Conference Player of the Month for February, as nominated by each member institution, selected by the league office, and announced today.
After leading Davidson to a 6-2 start to open the 2010 season, Barna becomes just the second Davidson Wildcat ever to be named SoCon Player of the Month and the first since Jay Heafner in March of 2005.
In eight games in February, the freshman from Suwanee, Ga., hit .452 (14-for-31) and led the team with a .774 slugging percentage, five doubles and 24 total bases, to go along with a home run and 10 RBI. He drew four walks and did not strike out in 31 at-bats.
Defensively, Barna made an immediate impact for the Wildcats, starting every game at third base and recording five putouts and 19 assists and just one error in the month.
Earlier this season, Barna was named SoCon Player of the Week for Feb. 22-28, after helping Davidson a perfect 5-0 week, in which he batted .579 (11-for-19) and slugged 1.053 with four doubles, a triple, a home run and nine RBI.
Wes Hobson (Appalachian State), Cole Rakar (College of Charleston), Matt Simonelli (The Citadel), Seth Canipe (Elon), Shawn Payne (Georgia Southern), Corey Overholtzer (UNC Greensboro), Bo Smith (Samford), Tyler Kirkpatrick (Western Carolina) and Mac Doyle (Wofford) were also nominated.
