DAVIDSON, N.C. -- The Davidson Wildcats extended their winning streak to six games with a sweep of a double-header Sunday afternoon at Wilson Field. Behind a 17-run first inning, the Wildcats defeated Mount St. Mary's, 29-7, in the opening game and downed Presbyterian, 11-5, in the nightcap.
Davidson improves to 6-2 after winning all four of its games this weekend. The Wildcats exploded for a school-record 17 runs in the opening frame of the first game. The previous all-time best was 14 runs in an inning, also against Mount St. Mary's on Feb. 17, 2001 in the second inning. Davidson was just a run off the all-time runs record (30 against N.C. A&T on March 17, 1992), but tied the record for hits in an inning (9) and hit batsmen in a game (8).
The Wildcats batted around twice in the opening frame, with the top three Davidson batters each getting three at-bats. Davidson took an 8-0 lead and chased starter Vincent Molesky (0-1) before he recorded an out as junior right fielder Sam Payne (single), sophomore second baseman James Cerbie (walk), sophomore center fielder Drew Gadaire (walk), junior first baseman Danny Weiss (two-RBI single), junior designated hitter Will General (error), freshman third baseman Andrew Barna (three-RBI triple), sophomore catcher Seth Freeman (RBI-single) and sophomore left fielder Jake Berman (single) all scored.
Mountaineer reliever Colin Stuver surrendered an RBI-double to freshman Michael Zeblo before finally striking out Payne for the first out of the inning. Cerbie was hit by a pitch in his second at-bat of the frame, and Gadaire cleared the bases with a triple into the gap in right center to push Davidson's lead to 11-0. Weiss was hit by a pitch, and General drove in Gadaire with a double into left in the next at-bat. Barna was hit by a pitch to load the bases, and Berman picked up an RBI by becoming the second straight hit batsman. Zeblo reached on an error by the third baseman Joe Kavanagh, allowing Barna and General to score, and Payne was the fifth Wildcat to get hit with a pitch to load the bases for Cerbie, who drove in the 'Cats' final runs with a three-RBI double into center field. Reliever Peter DeCandia took over and got Gadaire to fly out in his third at-bat to end the record-breaking frame.
With plenty of run support, sophomore Ryan Overcash earned his second win of the season, allowing just three runs on five hits and striking out five in five innings. With 23 total hits in the contest, every Davidson starter finished with at least a pair of hits, led by a three-hit game from lead off hitter Payne, who scored three runs and drove in a pair. Cerbie and Gadaire each drove in four runs on two hits, while Barna finished 2-for-4 with three RBI.
The nightcap was much more routine, with the Wildcats outscoring the Presbyterian Blue Hose 7-1 over the final five and a half innings to clinch the 11-5 win. Davidson scored a pair of runs to open the contest as Weiss and then General drove in a run, but the Blue Hose took a 4-2 lead with three runs in the second and another in the third.
General doubled in a pair of runs, as Gadaire (single) and Weiss (walk) scored in the third to knot the score, and Payne's two-run home run in the fourth gave Davidson a 6-4 advantage. After junior Mike Frongello worked a no-hit fifth, Barna's first collegiate round-tripper in the home-half gave Davidson an 8-4 lead. Frongello (2-0) allowed just one run (in the sixth on an RBI base hit by Gabe Grammer) in three innings of relief to earn his second win of the weekend.
Davidson added three more runs in the bottom of the eighth, as Zeblo's hit his first collegiate home run and Weiss drove in two more on his second hit of the game for the final 11-5 margin.
Gadaire (3-for-5) and General (3-for-4, 3 RBI) each finished with three hits to lead the Wildcats in the nightcap, while Weiss also drove in three runs.
Davidson will travel to Auburn for a pair of midweek games before returning to Wilson Field to host Bryant and UNC Asheville next weekend. The Wildcats face Auburn Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. CST and Wednesday at 3 p.m. CST.
