Layup Line
• Davidson returns to action at The Citadel Saturday afternoon in a Southern Conference contest.
• The Wildcats are still searching for their first true road win of the season after falling 82-73 at College of Charleston Thursday night.
• For the second consecutive campaign, Davidson opens its Southern Conference schedule with two road games in Charleston.
• The Wildcats are in the midst of a stretch where they play 10 of their first 13 games away from home.
• The Citadel is 2-1 at home and opened conference play with a 65-52 win over Georgia Southern at home Thursday night.
• The Bulldogs' only home loss came against James Madison Nov. 20, a 74-67 setback.
• Four 'Cats are averaging double figures in the scoring column, led by Jake Cohen's 13.1 points a game. JP Kuhlman averages 13 points, and Brendan McKillop averages 10.6. Rookie De'Mon Brooks is contributing 10.2 points and 5.2 rebounds off the bench.
• The Wildcats have 10 underclassman on the team (six freshman, four sophomores) and feature just one senior and four juniors.
• Davidson was picked to finish third in the SoCon South Division again this season, while The Citadel was picked fourth.
• Reigning SoCon Player of the Week and preseason all-league selection Cameron Wells leads the Bulldogs, averaging 18.8 points and 4.5 assists a game. Austin Dahn is averaging 11.8 points and 4.2 rebounds, and Zach Urbanus averages 9.8 points.
• Davidson coach Bob McKillop is 14 wins shy of his 400th career victory.
Series History
• The Wildcats lead the all-time series, which began in the 1925-26 season, 91-44.
• Davidson has won 16 of the last 17 overall against the Bulldogs and has won seven in a row on the road.
• The 'Cats are 32-35 against the Bulldogs on the road, 31-27 in McAlister Field House and 25-8 under Bob McKillop.
• In the last game in Charleston, Will Archambault led the Wildcats with 21 points, and Jake Cohen added 20 points and seven rebounds as Davidson opened its Southern Conference schedule with a 74-63 victory.
• JP Kuhlman posted 19 points and six rebounds, while Brendan McKillop added a game-high eight assists without committing a turnover.
• Davidson hit 15 3-pointers while shooting 48.2 percent from the floor. The Wildcats held The Citadel to 39.3 percent shooting, including 34.3 percent in the first half.
• McKillop scored both the game-tying and game-winning points as Davidson claimed a 67-63 overtime win over The Citadel in the last meeting of the series.
• The game went to overtime knotted at 57. The Citadel took a four-point lead early in the extra frame, but a three-ball from McKillop brought Davidson back within one. Cameron Wells answered for the Bulldogs with his second jumper in the period, but Archambault found Cohen underneath for a lay-in with 1:44 remaining, leaving the Bulldogs with a 63-62 advantage.
• Wells got called for travelling on the ensuing possession to return the ball to Davidson. With the shot clock near expiration, McKillop drained a contested 3-pointer from the top of the key with 55 seconds remaining to put the 'Cats on top 65-63.
• The Citadel had two possessions in the final minute but the 'Cats got defensive stops on both. Following a defensive rebound, Cohen sank both free throw attempts with two seconds remaining to ice the win.
• Cohen led three Davidson scorers in double-figures with 18 points on 7-of-14 shooting from the field, and also added eight rebounds, two assists and a block. McKillop finished with 17 points, shooting 6-for-11 from the field and 4-for-9 from behind the arc to go along with a team-leading six assists.
• Wells led the Bulldogs with 22 points and five assists. Urbanus netted 11 points and five rebounds and Bryan Streeter had 10 points and seven boards.
Leftovers from CofC
• It was Cohen's first career double-double, and his scoring total was one point shy of his career high.
• Cohen's 10 rebounds were a career high.
• Brendan McKillop had six assists, giving him 200 for his career.
• Cohen reached the 500-point mark for his career.
• Davidson dropped to 1-5 in Carolina First Arena, while Charleston improved to 26-5 in their new building.
• The Cougars have won four of the last five against Davidson.
SoCon Preseason Polls
• Davidson was picked third in the SoCon South Division in both the coaches and media preseason polls.
• Both JP Kuhlman and Jake Cohen were named preseason all-conference by the league's coaches.
• Appalachian State was picked to win the North, and Wofford was picked to win the South. College of Charleston was also picked ahead of Davidson in the South Division.
Youth Movement
• Davidson features 10 underclassmen (four sophomores, six freshman) on its roster.
• The team's lone senior is Brendan McKillop, and two of the juniors are walk-ons (Will Reigel, AJ Atkinson).
• The Wildcats have just 11 total years of Division I experience in their rotation. Only 25 teams in the country have less experience than Davidson.
• Six of the top seven scorers for the Wildcats are freshmen or sophomores.
• One senior, three sophomores and a freshman are slated to start today's game.
Freshman Starters
• Freshman Tom Droney started the season opener at Penn, becoming just the ninth rookie to start the season opener during Bob McKillop's tenure and the first since Stephen Curry in 2006.
• The list includes current assistant coach Landry Kosmalski, who started the 1996-97 opener at Fairleigh Dickinson.
• Fellow frosh Jason Zimmerman and Scott Alford started the 1990-91 opener against Central Connecticut State.
• Other freshman starters in season openers: Detlef Musch at Wake Forest in 1989; Jeff Anderson vs. St. Joseph's (Maine) in 1992; Wayne Bernard at Siena in 1999; Jouni Eho vs. South Florida in 2000.
Milestone Watch
• Brendan McKillop is 398 points away from 1,000 for his career. He also needs 39 3-pointers to move into the career top-5 at Davidson.
• Jake Cohen needs 15 blocked shots to move into the career top-10 at Davidson. Frank Ben-Eze needs 24.
• JP Kuhlman needs 17 points to reach 500 for his career.
