'Cats Drop Opener at Samford, 6-4

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Pat Brady was 2-for-4 with a home run, but the Wildcats dropped the opening game of the three-game Southern Conference series with the Samford Bulldogs, 6-4, Friday night in Birmingham, Ala.
Davidson (10-13, 5-5) scored a pair of runs in the top of the second inning, but the Bulldogs (11-17, 7-6) answered with four runs in the bottom of the frame to take the lead for good.
Brady's sixth home run of the season was the first run of the game for the Wildcats in the second inning, and Chase FitzPatrick (1-for-3) followed with a triple down the right field line. Drew Gadaire (1-for-3, 2 RBI) grounded out, but drove in FitzPatrick for Davidson's second run of the game.
Samford put up four runs in the bottom of the frame on four hits to claim a 4-2 lead, but Zach Kayne's (1-for-3, RBI) sixth home run of the season put the Wildcats within a run, 4-3, in the third.
The Bulldogs got another run in the bottom of the inning to maintain some spacing, though the Wildcats got it back in the fourth as Gadaire doubled home FitzPatrick, who walked.
Samford recorded the final run in the bottom of the inning on an RBI-single, which proved enough for the 6-4 victory.
Thomas Middour (2-2) took the loss for the Wildcats, allowing six runs (five earned) on nine hits in 3 1/3. Ian Horkley was strong for the 'Cats out of the bullpen, giving up just four hits in 4 1/13 scoreless innings.
For the Bulldogs, Michael Jarry earned the win, allowing four runs on seven hits in 7 1/3 innings.
The Wildcats and Bulldogs will play a double-header tomorrow, starting at 2 p.m. (EST).
