W. Soccer Records Second Shutout of Season, Wins Second Straight SoCon Match

Gavin McFarlin - Assistant SID

SPARTANBURG, S.C. — Senior Tracy McCausland (Albuquerque, N.M.) registered her first goal of the season and the Wildcat defense recorded their second shutout on the year in leading the Davidson women's soccer team to a 1-0 road win at Wofford on Sunday afternoon in Southern Conference action.

After dropping its last two non-conference games, Davidson is back on the winning track with the start of league play, scoring its second straight victory to run its overall mark to 4-2-3 and begin SoCon play a perfect 2-0-0. The perfect start in league play marks the second year in a row, and fourth time in the past five years, the Wildcats have won their first two league games.

With the victory against Wofford, Davidson pushed its unbeaten streak versus the Terriers to six games. Wofford dropped its third straight to fall to 1-6-3 overall and 0-2-0 in league play.

Led by the backline of the senior tandem of Melanee Smith (Bloomfield Township, Mich.) and Chloe King (Wellesley, Mass.) along with sophomore Amanda Flink (Richardson, Texas), Davidson's defense held Wofford to just five shots, with the Terriers not getting their first shot until the 48th minute in the second half.

Goalkeeper Jessie Baxa (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.), in her second collegiate start, earned the win and recorded her first career shutout.

"It was a tough, hard-fought game today," said head coach Greg Ashton, who earned his 55th career win at Davidson. "After playing well in the first half, Wofford came out with a little more intensity, which we had to adjust to. We had a couple of chances in the second half that would have certainly taken the game away from Wofford, but credit to them, they played very hard and kept the game close."

Davidson again came out with an aggressive approach as it did on Thursday evening in a win at Furman, controlling possession nearly the entire first half. The 'Cats got off seven shots in the first period, putting three of them on goal, including a shot by junior Katharine Laco (Bethesda, Md.) that clipped the right post.

The Wildcats aggressiveness played off in 31th minute behind senior captain's McCausland first goal of the season. Laco, on the far side of the field, got off a cross into the 18-yard box, where McCausland chipped in a right-footed shot to the near post for a 1-0 Wildcat advantage.

The Wildcat defense made the score hold up with Wofford getting only two shots on goal in the game as Davidson earned the 1-0 win.

"Our depth came into play today, and I was very pleased with the way everyone contributed to the winning effort," said Ashton.

Davidson earned an 11-5 count in shots and picked up the game's only corner kick.

Wofford's Katie McChesney finished with four saves between the pipes.

The Wildcats return home to face, for the first time in program history, the Samford Bulldogs on Friday, Oct. 3 at 7 p.m. Samford joined the league this year after being in the Ohio Valley Conference the past five years.
