W. Soccer Remains Perfect in SoCon Play After Shutting Out Samford, 3-0

DAVIDSON, N.C. — Senior Tracy McCausland (Albuquerque, N.M.) knocked in her second straight goal in as many games, and Davidson tacked on two more second-half goals as the Wildcats earned a convincing 3-0 shutout win over Samford on Friday evening at Alumni Stadium in women's Southern Conference soccer action.

For the second straight game, and third time overall this year, the Davidson defense was nearly flawless again by earning its third shutout of the season as the Wildcats ran their record to 5-2-3 overall, and for the second year in a row, started league play 3-0-0. The win also marked the program's first against Samford, which is in its inaugural year of playing in the SoCon.

The Bulldogs, fresh off a 0-0 overtime tie against SoCon-preseason favorite UNC Greensboro last Sunday, fell to 2-8-1 overall and 1-1-1 in the league.

Davidson started October the way it finished the month of September by showcasing an excellent balance of offense and defense. The Wildcats three goals tied a season-high and gave them seven goals in the past three games. The defense has been stout, allowing just two goals in the past three games, and currently ranks as one of the top teams in the conference in least amount of goals allowed.

Besides McCausland scoring her second goal of the season, junior Kyri Bye-Nagel (Hanau, Germany) and sophomore Amanda Flink (Richardson, Texas) also found the back of the net for the Wildcats, netting their fourth and second goals, respectively, on the year.

McCausland got the scoring started in the 14th minute when she faked out her defender by going left and then switching back to her right where she was in middle of the field for a wide open look at the goal. She then squared around and blasted a 28-yard shot that went to the top-left corner of the post for a 1-0 Davidson lead.

Samford nearly tied things up around the 37-minute mark when a Leah Leppert shot caromed off the cross bar. Davidson's defense though, was there to track down the loose ball and cleared it out of the box.

Coming out of halftime, Davidson added its second goal on a nicely placed through ball off a free kick by senior Melanee Smith (Bloomfield Township, Mich.) to the far left-side of the six-yard box where Flink drilled home a header to the near post for her second score of the season. The assist for Smith gave her a team-best three on the year.

Preseason all-conference pick Bye-Nagel closed out the scoring at the 65:15 mark with her team-leading fourth goal of the season by beating her defender one-on-one. After a long through ball went to Bye-Nagel on the far side of the field, the junior went straight at her defender and then crossed over to the middle of the field where she struck a shot just outside the 18-yard box to the far post to give Davidson a commanding 3-0 advantage.

Samford was shut down all evening by the Wildcat defense as it placed just three of its nine shots on goal. Davidson had a 10-9 advantage in shots, placing seven of its own shots on goal.

Freshman Jessie Baxa (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.), in her third straight start, registered three saves to improve to 3-0 between the pipes and earned her second shutout in a row.

Both Cayley Winters and Alyssa Whitehead played in goal for the Bulldogs, combining for four saves.

Davidson returns to action this Sunday when it hosts Chattanooga at 2 p.m. The Wildcats have dominated the all-time series against the Mocs, leading by the count of 12-1-1, and have taken wins in the past four meetings.
