Bye-Nagel's Two Goals Paces W. Soccer to 5-0 Win vs. Chattanooga

DAVIDSON, N.C. — Led by junior Kyri Bye-Nagel's (Hanau, Germany) first multi-goal game of the season, the Davidson women's soccer team netted a season-best five goals, while the defense tallied its third straight shutout in leading the Wildcats to a 5-0 triumph over visiting Chattanooga in Southern Conference women's soccer action on Sunday.

The Wildcats ran their winning streak to four in a row in improving to 6-2-3 overall and 4-0-0 in SoCon play. The last time Davidson started 4-0-0 in league play was the 2005 campaign when it went on to go unbeaten at 9-0-1.

Chattanooga fell to 4-8-1 overall and 1-3-0 in league games.

Lately, the Wildcats have been clicking on all cylinders both offensively and defensively, and they both were again highlighted in the 5-0 win over Chattanooga. During the Wildcats' four-game win streak, they have outscored their opponents, 12-2.

Bye-Nagel got things started when she struck for her fifth goal of the season at the 21:56 mark. Fellow classmate Lauren Conner (Mechanicsburg, Pa.) crossed a ball from the right endline into the box where Bye-Nagel kicked it to the near post for a 1-0 Wildcat advantage.

Up 1-0 after halftime, Davidson showcased its offensive fire-power with four more goals for the 5-0 win. Besides Bye-Nagel's second score in the second half, senior Tiffany Mumby (Houston, Texas), junior Blakely Low (San Antonio, Texas) and sophomore Amanda Flink (Richardson, Texas) also found the back of the net in the winning effort.

Bye-Nagel started the scoring rally in the second half with her second goal of the game in the 51st minute. Off a free kick just past midfield on the near side, senior Melanee Smith (Bloomfield Township, Mich.) served a perfectly placed through ball into the far side of six-yard box where a streaking Bye-Nagel timed the pass just right and drilled a right-footed shot to the far post to give her a team-high six goals on the year.

Mumby, who had a couple of direct shots on goal in the opening half, got the Wildcats third goal in the 75th minute when sophomore Allison Drutchas (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) set up the score with a long pass to a streaking Mumby. The senior then went one-on-one with her defender, made a quick move in the box and then took a direct shot to the far post for her seventh career score.

Then in the 85th minute, junior Low tallied Davidson's fourth goal with a strike from the left of the 18-yard box after freshman Elizabeth Underwood (Atlanta, Ga.) fed her on a clean through ball deep in Moc territory.

Capping the scoring off was Flink with her third goal of the season when her shot went through the hands of Chattanooga's Allie Preston to the far post off a corner kick from Smith.

Smith pushed her team-best assist total to five, tying her career-high from her freshman year.

While the offense was click along, the backline, led by senior Chloe King (Wellesley, Mass.), was as dominate as it has been all year. The defense did not allow a shot until the 64th minute of the second half and went on to pick up the Wildcats' fourth shutout win of the season.

Freshman goalkeeper Christy Carry (Dallas, Texas) picked up her second shutout win on the year by playing all 90 minutes, while Preston recorded 10 saves between the pipes for Chattanooga in a losing effort.

Davidson looks to remain undefeated in SoCon action when it hits the road for a single game on Friday, Oct. 10, at College of Charleston. Gametime is set for 7 p.m.
