CHARLESTON, S.C. — The Davidson women's soccer team saw their season-high four-match win streak come to an end when Megan Manthey knocked in the game-winner at the start of the first overtime to send the College of Charleston Cougars to a 1-0 victory on a rainy Friday evening at Patriots Point Soccer Stadium in Southern Conference action.
With the win, the Cougars improved to 9-3-2 on the year and 2-2-1 in the SoCon. Davidson, winners of its first four league games to open the season, fell to 6-3-3 overall and 4-1-0 in the SoCon. Dating back to the end of last season, the Wildcats had won their previous nine SoCon contests.
With the Cougars attacking the Davidson net, Manthey lined up a shot from just outside the box on the near side of the field. She ball a shot over freshman goalkeeper Christy Carry (Dallas, Texas) and into the goal, ending the game just a 1:30 into overtime.
In the first half, both teams had numerous opportunities to get on the scoreboard, but could not convert on any attempts.
One sequence in particular occurred in the last 20 seconds of the first half, in which the Cougars attacked the Davidson goal with a flurry of shots, only to be denied by goalkeeper Jessie Baxa (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) on each attempt.
Baxa finished the evening with four saves in the first half as she gave way to fellow freshman Carry in the second half. Carry earned two saves in the losing effort, her first defeat of the season.
In the second period, a steady rain began to fall and with that, the Charleston and Davidson defenses both clamped down, allowing only a combined two shots in the period to force overtime.
For the game, the Cougars out shot the Wildcats, 8-4. College of Charleston's goalkeeper Erin Smith earned her league-leading sixth shutout victory of the season after making three saves between the pipes.
The Wildcats return home for a three-game stretch, starting with a 2 p.m. contest this Sunday against The Citadel at Alumni Stadium. Davidson has never lost to the Bulldogs, owning a 7-0-0 record in the all-time series.
