DAVIDSON, N.C. -- Davidson's Stephen Curry was a unanimous choice as the Southern Conference Player of the Year, while Jason Richards, Thomas Sander and Head Coach Bob McKillop were also honored by the Southern Conference Sports Media Association (SCSMA) Tuesday morning.
A sophomore from Charlotte, N.C., Curry led the SoCon in scoring and ranks fifth nationally with an average of 25.3 points per game. The five-time league Player of the Week and three-time Player of the Month also ranks among national leaders in free-throw percentage (8th/89.4), three-pointers made (3rd/125) and three-pointers per game (3rd/4.3).
Named to both the Wooden and Naismith midseason lists, Curry hit the 20-point plateau 21 times this season and the 30-point mark eight times, including a career-high 41 points at UNC Greensboro, Feb. 13. To go along with his scoring totals, the 6-3 shooting guard has hit five or more three-pointers in a contest 14 times on the campaign.
A year ago, Curry was named SoCon Freshman of the Year, first-team all-conference and the 2007 SoCon Tournament MVP.
For the second consecutive season, Curry's backcourt mate Richards joins him on the SCSMA All-SoCon first team. Richards, the Wildcat point guard and senior from Barrington, Ill., leads the nation in assists (233) and assists per game, averaging 8.0 per outing.
During the 2007-08 regular season, the Bob Cousy nominee handed out 10 or more assists on eight separate occasions and recorded five double-doubles to give him nine for his career. The Davidson tri-captain also scored in double figures 22 times this season, which included four games of 20 points or more.
Richards finished the regular season in impressive fashion, recording his 1,000 career point against Appalachian State (Feb. 27) and becoming just the second Davidson player to hand out 600 career assists in the finale at Georgia Southern (March 1).
A three-year starter and two-time Wildcat captain, Sander ranks fourth in the SoCon in field-goal percentage (.547) and among league leaders in rebounding (5.0). A product of Cincinnati, Ohio, and Elder High, Sander recorded double figures in seven games this year including a season-high 21 points at College of Charleston (Jan. 26).
To go along with his double-digit scoring, the two-time All-SoCon performer grabbed 10 or more rebounds three times to give him 13 for his time in a Wildcat uniform.
The all-time winningest coach in school and SoCon history, McKillop was named the media's Coach of the Year for the second straight season and league-record seventh of his career. Davidson's perfect 20-0 SoCon slate marks the third time (1995-95, 2004-05, 2007-08) under McKillop the Wildcats have run through the conference slate flawless.
Sitting at 334-224 for his 19-year career with the Wildcats, McKillop has guided his club to nine conference divisional crowns, four league tournament titles and seven postseason berths -- the NCAA Tournament in 1998, 2002, '06 and '07 and the NIT in 1994, '98 and 2005.
With four-straight 20-win seasons for the first time since 1962-66, McKillop has now hit the plateau eight times during his tenure.
The Citadel's Cameron Wells was the choice of the media for the league's Freshman of the Year. The league's leading scorer among freshmen (14.6 ppg) edged Appalachian State's Donald Sims, College of Charleston's Andrew Goudelock and Georgia Southern's Willie Powers for the honor.
Nine teams had players named to the SCSMA all-conference team. Davidson (Curry, Richards and Sander), and College of Charleston (Jermaine Johnson, Andrew Goudelock and Tony White, Jr,.) each had three players earn all-conference honors. Appalachian State (Donte Minter and Jeremy Clayton) and Chattanooga (Nicchaeus Doaks and Stephen McDowell) each landed two players, while Elon (Ola Atoyebi), Georgia Southern (Louis Graham), UNC Greensboro (Kyle Hines), Western Carolina (Brandon Giles) and Wofford (Drew Gibson) all had one player represented.
The Southern Conference coaches all-conference team will be announced on Thursday, March 6.
Winners of 19 straight, Davidson enters this week's Southern Conference Men's Basketball Tournament 23-6 overall. The top-seeded and two-time defending champions begin play in Saturday's quarterfinals at 2 p.m. against the winner of #8 Wofford / #9 Western Carolina.
