BLACKSBURG, Va. — The No. 63 Virginia Tech women's tennis team had little trouble Saturday afternoon in defeating Davidson College, 7-0, at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center.
Davidson saw its four-match win streak come to an end as it fell to 5-2 on the season. It had won its previous four matches by the score of 7-0. Tech, ranked No. 63 in this week's Intercollegiate Tennis Association national poll, improved to 6-2 as it swept the three doubles matches for the first point of the day, then took all of the six singles contests for the victory.
In singles, play the Wildcats' Virginia Berry and Lora Dushanova forced three-set matches, but could not pull out the decisive third set. Berry dropped her first set, 6-7, but came back with a 6-4 decision in the second set to force the final set. From there, the Hokies Jessica Long captured the third set in a tie-breaker.
Dushanova, who entered her match against Natalie Kretzer a perfect 3-0, also played to a tie breaker in the third set after taking a 6-1 decision in the first set and then falling 6-0 in the second set. Kretzer though, out-lasted Dushanova in the tie breaker to earn the final singles win and point for Virginia Tech.
Also seeing her perfect singles mark come to an end was freshman Alison Rauh at the No. 5 spot. Like Dushanova, Rauh was 3-0 as well, but dropped a 6-3, 6-2 match to J.J. Larson.
The Hokies swept the doubles to open the dual match with Holly Johnson and Larson closing out the doubles point with a tight 8-6 win against Rauh and senior Kim Whelan.
Davidson stays in Blacksburg, Va. for its second match on Sunday, Feb. 17 at 11 a.m. against Radford.
