CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. — Hard times continued for the Davidson volleyball team, who suffered a 3-0 loss (30-27, 30-21, 30-25) to the Chattanooga Mocs on Sunday afternoon in Southern Conference volleyball action.
With the loss, the 'Cats fall to 5-10 overall and 0-2 in SoCon play, while Chattanooga improves to 7-6 overall and 3-0 in the league.
Senior outside hitter Katie Pierucci posted 14 kills and 12 digs for her sixth double-double of the season, while junior middle blocker Kittery Neale also touched double digits for the 'Cats with 12 kills.
Chattanooga was led by Leslee Ball, who tallied 14 kills and hit .262.
Neale served back-to-back points to give Davidson an early 2-0 lead in game one, but three straight Chattanooga aces put the Mocs back on top. Davidson answered with three straight behind a kill from sophomore outside hitter Tierney Hodge, a block from Pierucci and freshman Jorden Benedict, and an ace by senior libero Lindsey Woeste to take a 7-6 lead. Though the 'Cats surrendered the lead, a kill from Neale kept things close, 12-11, until the Mocs used an 8-4 run to open a 20-15 lead. The 'Cats put together a 5-2 run to get within one, 22-21, forcing the Mocs into a timeout, and stayed close the rest of the way, but Chattanooga managed the 30-27 win.
The Mocs jumped out to a 9-2 lead to start the second game, but after a quick timeout, Davidson won the next three points to get back in the game, 9-5. Chattanooga started to pull away, when back-to-back kills from Neale narrowed the Mocs lead to 18-11, but Davidson could never get closer, and the Mocs took a two-game lead with the 30-21 win.
Despite getting behind early, Davidson led for much of the third game. With the score knotted at eight, a service ace from freshman defensive specialist Jennifer Chamblee put the 'Cats on top. The Wildcats held, as a kill from Pierucci pushed their lead to 17-15, but the Mocs won four straight to take a 19-17 lead. Davidson evened things again at 19, and a block from Neale coupled with a Pierucci ace forced Chattanooga into a timeout. Out of the break, the Mocs put together a 7-1 run to take a 26-22 lead, and eventually, a 30-25 win for the match.
Davidson will return to action next weekend, hosting the College of Charleston at Belk Arena on Fri., Sept. 28 at 7 p.m. and the Citadel on Sat., Sept. 29 at 2 p.m.
