DAVIDSON, N.C. -- Senior outside hitter Katie Pierucci posted her 10th double-double of the season with 13 kills and 22 digs, but the 'Cats couldn't fight back from the early deficit, falling 3-1 (30-26, 30-28, 26-30, 30-26) to the Appalachian State Mountaineers on Thursday night in SoCon volleyball action.
Appalachian moves to 7-13 overall and an even 4-4 in league play, while Davidson falls to 6-15 and 1-7 in the SoCon.
Freshman outside hitter Sarabeth Peele and junior middle blocker Kittery Neale also reached double figures for the 'Cats with 11 and 18 kills, respectively.
Brittany Zahn led the Mountaineers with 17 kills, while Dianna Thomas and Carla Durham each contributed 14 kills.
Davidson took an early lead to open the match, behind strong serving from Pierucci and senior defensive specialist Courtney Cron. The 'Cats kept coming, pushing the advantage to 13-8 and forcing the Mountaineers into a timeout, but ASU mounted a steady attack. With Davidson leading 17-12, Appalachian's Lorelle Rau served four straight points. A few possessions later, a kill from Thomas knotted the score at 20, and the Mountaineers led the rest of the way, as Lauren Swecker's lone kill of the game lifted the 'Cats to a 30-26 win.
Appalachian grabbed the lead to start game two, but the back-to-back Mountaineer errors gave Davidson the lead, 11-10. The two teams traded points until a Zahn putaway helped ASU to a 14-13 edge, but the 'Cats would stay close the rest of the way and have a chance in the end. A kill from Peele put Davidson within one at 29-28, but the Mountaineers held on for the 30-28 win to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
Davidson came out strong after the break, jumping ahead 21-14 as Neale recorded eight kills and hit .778 to pace the Wildcat offensive attack. Appalachian again rallied, firing off four straight points to make a game of it at 24-20, but a pair of kills from Pierucci secured the 30-26 win.
In the final game, the 'Cats again stayed close until the end, trailing by a lone point at 24-23. But with the match hanging in the balance, Appalachian used a 5-3 run to claim a 30-26 win for the match.
