Davidson '05
Andy Carter, a 2005 Davidson graduate and former pitcher in the New York Yankees’ organization, is in his second season as a Wildcats assistant.
Carter is serving as the outfield coach this season after assisting with the pitchers and catchers for the 2013 season as a volunteer assistant. He also conducts scouting reports on opponents and assists with recruiting.
Before returning to Davidson, Carter was the varsity baseball head coach at nearby North Mecklenburg H.S.
"Andy had an outstanding career at Davidson and was a great competitor on the mound for us," said head coach Dick Cooke. "He can speak to the experience of having been a successful student-athlete at Davidson while also having played professional baseball for an affiliated organization.”
Carter was a 35th round selection of the New York Yankees after graduating from Davidson in 2005 with a degree in history, and was a member of the 2005 Gulf Coast League Champion GCL Yankees team. In 2006, he pitched for the Washington Wildthings (Frontier League) and Gary Southshore Railcats (Northern League), and in 2007 he played for the Anderson Joes (South Coast League). He later worked for both the Yankees and Baltimore Orioles in baseball operations, working on advance scouting reports, minor league video input, and other special projects.
“My experiences as a student-athlete at Davidson and in professional baseball are some of my greatest memories and I look forward to building new ones with the team as we strive for great success in the classroom and on the baseball field," said Carter.
As head coach, Carter ran all aspects of the North Mecklenburg H.S. baseball program for the 2011-12 academic year, revitalizing the program and guiding the conference player of the year. The year prior, he served as an assistant director of marketing and promotions in athletics at Davidson. From 2005 to 2011, Carter served as a pitching instructor for The Fungo Baseball School in nearby Cornelius, and served as a pitching coach for several of The Fungo’s travel teams.
Carter has also worked several baseball camps, including those at Duke, Belmont Abbey and Wofford.
Carter, a native of Williamsville, N.Y. was twice named the Wildcats’ most valuable pitcher during his career, and still ranks second in school history in career strikeouts (258) and innings pitched (322.1). As a senior, he led the ‘Cats to their first winning season in 13 years. He received an MBA in sports management and marketing from UNC Charlotte in 2010.
