DAVIDSON, N.C. - The Davidson women's tennis team split its weekend matches, picking up a significant 4-2 victory over East Carolina and falling by a slim 4-3 margin in its Atlantic 10 opener versus Fordham.

The weekend results moves Wildcats' record to 5-2 overall and 1-0 in league play.

In its first match of the two-day slate, Davidson opened the day taking the first team point with pairs Daniela Porges and Kavya Patel and Ellie Hammond alongside Charlotte Calderwood earning wins at the No. 1 and No. 3 spots respectively.

Patel and Hammond were both also victorious in singles play. Patel cruised to a 6-3, 6-2 triumph on court one while Hammond edged her opponent on court five by way of 6-2, 7-6(7-4) win.

The Rams were able to take two points of its own with three two-set victories in the No. 2, No. 4 spots and No. 6 to even the score. With the match down to court three and Savanna Kollock winning the first set 6-4 before falling 6-3 in the second to force a third, Fordham fought for every point on the way to a 7-6(8) final set decision.

"This match could have gone either way," said head coach Susanne Depka. "It was so close. This team should hold their heads high. If we continue on the same path these matches will turn in our favor. It was a fun day and I'm proud of our team for all they are doing in practice and working to translate it into matches."

The Wildcats kicked off Sunday in the same fashion, winning the doubles point. Patel and Porges earned another team win (6-3) on court one while Kollock and Bryson Langford toughed out a win on court two (7-5).

Kollock and Langford added two quick singles points onto the 'Cats team total with Kollock winning 6-2, 6-4 at the No. 3 position and Langford 6-4, 6-0 at No. 4. The Pirates won their first point of the match on court five before taking their second in a three-set win on court two.

However, Patel in the top spot was able to clinch the match for Davidson, taking her first set 6-2 before dropping the second 7-6(8) and coming back to dominate the third 6-2. The win over ECU Sunday marks the first over the Pirates under the guidance of head coach Susanne Depka.

"This was an amazing level of discipline and commitment to what we have been doing in practice and it showed on the court today,' said Depka. "Our level of tennis has improved greatly and I don't really have enough words to express the joy and excitement I have for the team. I am very proud of what they are accomplishing. We will continue to work hard on court after today so we stay strong for next weekend."
