DAVIDSON, N.C. - The Davidson women's tennis team extended its winning streak to three matches with a road victory over Presbyterian (4-3) and home win against UNC Asheville (6-1) Saturday and Sunday respectively.Â
The pair of triumphs improves the Wildcats record to 7-2 overall while remaining 0-1 in Atlantic 10 competition.Â
"Saturday was a huge battle," said head coach Susanne Depka. " Presbyterian played well and pushed us in every spot. We had a lot of adversity going into this match. We are definitely improving and becoming stronger both mentally, physically and strategically from practice and i cred the team for continuing to push themselves."
Bryson Langford and Savanna Kollock stepped up to play in the No. 1 doubles position, taking the 'Cats first win of the day with a 6-3 win before the Blue Hose took one back on court three. In their debut as a doubles pair on court two, Kavya Patel and Olivia Hooper edged out a 7-6(7-5) win to take the team point.Â
Presbyterian took two singles wins on courts two and four in order to move ahead 2-1 in the team points before Charlotte Calderwood was able to knot it 2-2 following a 6-4, 6-0 victory at No. 5. Langford then pulled the Wildcats ahead with a 6-4, 6-2 victory on court three.Â
Senior Patel came up clutch once more, clinching the match for Davidson (6-4, 6-2) against a solid Presbyterian opponent at the No. 1 position.Â
Sunday's match was much closer than the score alludes to with five singles matches going to three-set battles.Â
"We had a challenging day against Presbyterian Saturday, but came out with much better intensity against UNC Asheville," said Depka. "Our theme for the weekend was determination, discipline and courage. We did a tremendous job sticking to these and I don't believe we came out on top either day without committing to these processes."
"I can't say enough about what the team is doing in practice and I hope they see how it is paying off. We will continue to push them each day mentally and physically so we are at our best in April. I am so proud of their trust in the processes and continuing to have the belief to do them in each match."Â
The Wildcats kicked off doubles play strong again with wins at No. 2 and No. 3 for an early 1-0 lead. Kollock and Ellie Hammond took the first sets before falling in the second and rallying back to both take the third, putting Davidson ahead 3-0.Â
Calderwood was the next to extend the Wildcats point differential winning 6-1, 6-2 on court five before Olivia Hooper battled back from a opening set loss to push three. Hooper dropped the first 7-6 before taking the second 7-6 herself. In the final frame with the whole team watching, pulled out a thrilling 11-9 tiebreaker win.Â
