DAVIDSON - The Davidson women's tennis team earned their fourth straight victory, defeating non-conference opponent Gardner-Webb 4-3 on its home courts Mar. 5.Â
The win improves the Wildcats' overall record to an impressive 8-2 while its Atlantic 10 mark remains 0-1 awaiting its next league match.Â
"Gardner-Webb is always a battle," said head coach Susanne Depka. "They are a strong team. They make you work for every point and they are very solid mentally. Everyone fought hard and worked through things in each match. We have definitely improved mentally and physically and I'm very proud of the team for their continued efforts in both these areas."Â
The Bulldogs opened the day clinching the doubles point which was no small feat. All three matches were close, with identical winning scores of 7-5 on courts two and three for Gardner-Webb, while leaving the No. 1 spot unfinished at 6-6 and 7-7 in its tiebreak.Â
Singles competition started strong in favor of the 'Cats, who took the first set on courts one, three, four and five. Bryson Langford tallied the first point for Davidson, defeating her court three opponent 6-2, 6-2.Â
Senior and two-time player of the week Kavya Patel followed with a 6-4, 6-4 triumph at No. 1 before rookie Ellie Hammond overcame a lost second set to win her No. 4 bout in three sets and put Davidson ahead 3-1.Â
Gardner-Webb went on to take two singles matches of their own to even the team score 3-3, taking wins on courts two and six.Â
With sophomore Ines Roti the last being played on court five, Roti battled back from the 6-4 opening set loss to take the second 6-3 and force a third. The Locust Valley, N.Y. native was able to gut out a match-clinching win taking the final set 6-4 and giving the Wildcats the final team point over the Bulldogs.Â
"Ines did an amazing job of staying in the present and focusing on her match and what she needed to do," said Depka. "I am happy she experienced being the last match on and securing the win for the team. I am also super proud of how she controlled her emotions and mentality. It was a long and rewarding day for the Wildcats."Â
