DAVIDSON, N.C. - The Davidson College women's soccer team tied Duquesne, 1-1 Thursday in its Atlantic 10 Conference opener at Alumni Stadium.Â
The tie adjusts the Wildcats' record to 3-4-1 overall and 0-0-1 in league play while the Dukes become 3-5-1 overall and 0-0-1 in conference competition.Â
"I'm so proud of how the group played tonight" said head coach Riley Piechnick. "After going down a goal, the group responded with an intense energy to score that was exciting to see. It's the first time this season that we were able to come back from a deficit. I thought we put on a strong performance across all lines and showed a Davidson team that is capable of doing some special things on the field the rest of the way."Â
Sunday's match was a hard fought battle by both squads. The first half of competition saw the 'Cats and Dukes each take four shots, which Duquesne was able to capitalize from in the 35th minute to take a 1-0 lead into the halftime break.Â
The second half was a complete change of pace as Davidson dominated in their offensive zone and peppered the Dukes with 12 shots. On the opposite end of the field the 'Cats defense held Duquesne to just three of their own over the final 45 minutes of action.Â
The Wildcats were able to knot the score when a powerful shot by Riley Patton was saved but Savannah Pruitt for the second time this season was there to follow up and find the back of the net in the 61st minute.Â
Pruitt's goal had the potential to be the second of the contest for the 'Cats as just moments before, Aleia Gisolfi-McCready was awarded a penalty kick but Dukes goalkeeper Maddy Neundorfer made a vital save.Â
With the final minutes dwindling down, neither team was able to break the tie, en route to a 1-1 draw to open A-10 play.Â
Davidson was led on offense by Pruitt with her goal and two shots. Gisolfi-McCready and Patton each ended the match with five shots and three on goal. SJ Pak (3 shots, 1 on goal) and Charlotte Snead (1 shot on goal) rounded out Wildcat players to take a shot in the game.Â
In her eighth 90-minute effort, Emily Smith made three saves while allowing just one goal.Â
For the match, the 'Cats held advantages in shots (16-7) and shots on goal (9-4) while the Dukes led in corner kicks (5-4).Â
