Moore's Hat Trick Lifts Davidson Past GW
3/25/2023 3:22:00 PM | Women's Lacrosse
DAVIDSON, N.C. – The Davidson lacrosse team relied on a four-goal third quarter to pull away from the George Washington Colonials on Saturday afternoon and defeat the Atlantic 10 foe 12-7.
GW controlled the game's momentum in the first half with deadlock defense, holding the 'Cats to just five goals and 11 first half turnovers. Riley Moore paced the Wildcats' second half boost with a game high and career high three goals, while Julianne Carey had a game-best four points and seven draw controls.
The Colonials took the first lead of the day with a goal less than 90 seconds into the game, before Erin Cooke and Carey got the 'Cats started with back-to-back goals by the 12:10 mark in the first.
After leading just 5-3 at halftime, the Wildcats relied on production from rookies Allie Hartnett and Shayna Brodman, along with Sophia Passalaqua's first goal of the season, to extend to their largest lead of the day, 9-3, at the end of the third quarter. During the four-goal frame, the 'Cats held the Colonials to just three shots and one goal to create distance.
George Washington's lone goal of the period came just before the end of the third, as the Colonials opened up the fourth with two straight scores to cut its deficit to three, 9-6, with over 10 minutes remaining. Despite the Colonials' threat, Moore struck twice more, in addition to Lauren Garcia's first goal of the year, which ultimately sealed the A-10 victory.
Amanda Monahan won her ninth game of the season in cage with four saves, while the Davidson defense caused 12 turnovers. Overall, Davidson out shot GW 25-19 and won the draw 16-7.
