11/29/2023 10:59:00 PM | Men's Basketball
CHARLOTTE — Forward David Skogman scored a career-high 30 points and point guard Grant Huffman had his first double-double as the Davidson Wildcats topped cross-county rival Charlotte 85-81 Wednesday night in the annual Battle for the Hornets' Nest Trophy in Halton Arena.
It's Davidson's second win in the last three meetings with the 49ers and their eighth in the previous 11 matchups.
The Wildcats (4-3) overcame an early 11-0 deficit and took a 24-23 lead with 7:30 left in the first half, then built a double-digit lead of their own in the second half, moving ahead for good on a Bobby Durkin 3-pointer with 14:20 to play. Down the stretch, though, the Wildcats had to hold off a surge from Charlotte (4-3), which hit three off-balance 3-pointers to keep the game within reach.
Skogman, a 6-10 senior, did damage from inside and out and scored early and late to lead the way. He tallied 19 points in the second half, finished 11-of-17 from the field and connected on three of his six shots from beyond the arc. He scored nine consecutive points in the first half as the Wildcats erased the Charlotte lead and hit all four of his free throws in the final minute. His previous scoring high was 20 points, while playing for Buffalo, and he had 17 points against Western Carolina last season.
Huffman finished with 10 points and a career-best 11 assists, while navigating the offense. His previous high was 10 assists against UMass last season.
Durkin added 18 points, including 11 straight in the second half, and he hit two free throws with 8.7 seconds to play to seal the win. Durkin and Connor Kochera each hit four treys, with Kochera providing 16 points, including six on back-to-back threes to jumpstart the Davidson offense in the opening minutes.
Charlotte also had four double-digit scorers, led by Igor Milicic Jr., who had 19.
