DAVIDSON — Coach Zoe Almquist wanted to see her Davidson field hockey team take advantage of the opportunities in front of it Friday night against Saint Louis, and she saw the Wildcats do just that in a 3-1 win at Belk Turf Field.
"I thought we did that under a lot of pressure and adapted to the things that were happening in the game, and because of that, I'm really proud of the fight that we put in," she said. "Sometimes in a game, you have to battle through and be more gritty."
The Atlantic 10 Conference win improved the Wildcats to 6-11, their most wins since 2016, and 1-6 in the league.
To get it, the Wildcats had to break 1-1 tie and defend a barrage of Saint Louis penalty corners, including seven in the second half.
Celie Constantine's goal with 3:28 left in the third period proved to be the game-winner. Constantine inserted a penalty corner, then tipped in a pass from Sib Naaktgeboren to give the Wildcats a 2-1 edge.
Davidson got an insurance goal from Evie Lake with 5:13 remaining, when Lake scored following a rebound.
The game had a quick start, as the teams traded goals in the first 75 seconds. Macy Curtis gave Davidson a 1-0 lead 50 seconds into the contest, but Saint Louis (3-12, 1-6) answered with a goal from Sierra Larson.
Davidson finished with an 18-13 shots advantage, including 14-4 in shots-on-goal.
