'Cats Drop A10 Opener at Richmond

RICHMOND, Va. — Richmond scored twice in the opening minutes and led throughout a 5-2 win over Davidson in the Atlantic 10 Conference field hockey opener early Friday evening at Crenshaw Field.

With the result, Davidson fell to 4-4 overall, while the Spiders improved to 5-2.

The Wildcats scored both their goals in the fourth quarter, including when Ava Perkins followed up a deflected shot from Emma Datch after inserting a penalty corner. Perkins' first career goal cut the Spiders' lead to 3-1.

Matilda Collins added a penalty stroke, her fifth goal of the season, to make it 4-2 with 3:47 to play.

Richmond's Maura Seeger started the scoring with a goal three minutes and 12 seconds into the game. Less than two minutes later, Abril Peroni scored off a penalty corner.

Maia Dechario added a goal 29 seconds into the second half, also off a corner, and Clara Larripa scored a minute after Perkins' goal. Valen Luna Panatore converted a penalty stroke shortly after Collins to finalize the scoring.

The Spiders finished with advantages in shots (24-12), shots-on-goal (12-7) and penalty corners (12-8).

Under pressure much of the first half, Davidson keeper Avery Foster finished with seven saves.
