'Cats Push No. 17 UMass in 3-2 Loss

DAVIDSON — Adriana Risi and Ava Mickel scored first-half goals and the Davidson field hockey team pushed No. 17 UMass to the limit in a 3-2 loss Friday night at Belk Turf Field.
It took a UMass goal from Jess Beech with 3:55 to play for the Minutewomen to escape with the win.
Davidson fell to 5-10 overall and 0-5 in the Atlantic 10, while UMass improved to 9-6 and 3-2.
UMass wasted little time getting on the board, as Claire Danahy scored just 1:46 into the game. Risi answered in the seventh minute with her second goal of the year, and the Wildcats took a 2-1 lead after Mickel scored at the 11:48 mark of the second quarter, also on her second score of the season.
Izzy Acquaviva's goal for UMass tied it 2-2 just 1:21 before the intermission, and the teams played a scoreless third quarter.
Davidson keeper Cato Roell faced 22 shots, including 15 on goal, and made 11 saves. Bella Worthington had a defensive save.

The Wildcats are idle the rest of the weekend and will visit No. 14 Saint Joseph's next Friday.
