DAVIDSON, N.C. -- Despite stealing a set from the Billikens, for just the second time in five meetings, Davidson's rallying efforts weren't enough in Friday night's A-10 opening loss to Saint Louis.
Thanks to lengthy rallies throughout the match, Davidson had five Wildcats record double-digit digs. Isabel Decker matched her career-high in digs with 17, to pair with seven kills, and Bella Brady recorded 30 digs of her own. The Wildcats' blocking unit shined against the Billikens, tallying 17 total blocks, with four solos and two assists coming from Anela Davis while Isabella Perry, Hattie Rodrigez and Sola Omonije each added two block assists to the scoresheet.
Overall, Saint Louis swung a .156 attacking percentage at the net while the 'Cats hit .055 as a team en route to the 3-1 loss. However, Davidson did not go down without a fight, boasting an impressive .250 attacking percentage in its 25-16 second set victory.
In the second, Davidson's offense fired on all cylinders, recording 10 kills with just two attack errors, compared to SLU's 11, and the 'Cats produced four timely blocks at the net. With a kill from Lauryn Albold to open the frame, the Wildcats never looked back, leading by as many as nine points throughout the set. The Billikens did threaten Davidson's lead late in the second, going on a four-point run to make it a 18-15 game, but Omonije came up with a kill and a succeeding service ace to put the set out of reach.Â
Despite the loss, Davidson will look ahead to more A-10 matchups this weekend, first with Fordham on Saturday at 6 p.m. and then Rhode Island on Sunday at 1 p.m. For more information, visit davidsonwildcats.com/coverage.
