'Cats Capture First A-10 Win Over Fordham, 3-1

9/25/2021 8:24:00 PM | Volleyball

DAVIDSON, N.C. -- The Davidson Wildcats secured their first Atlantic 10 Conference win of the season on Saturday, routing the Fordham Rams in a 3-1 victory from inside Belk Arena.

The 'Cats dominated the first two sets of the day, torching the nets with .368 and .191 attacking percentages, while combining for five total blocks. Three 'Cats recorded double-doubles in the win, as Xuan Nguyen dished a match-high 23 assists and picked up 10 digs, while Jessie Doyal tallied 22 assists and 10 digs and rookie Isabel Decker finished with 13 kills and 14 digs. Hattie Rodriguez and Bella Brady were also steady hands for Davidson, as Rodriguez recorded 13 kills and Brady added 25 digs to the scoresheet.

Lauryn Albold, Sola Omonije and Anela Davis were dominant forces, both offensively and defensively at the net against the Rams, as the trio combined for 20 kills and 14 of the Wildcat's 18 total blocks on the night.

Davidson blasted out to a 5-0 lead in the first and never looked back, leading by as many as eight points throughout the set. Despite the Rams' best efforts, which saw Fordham pull within two of the 'Cats at 9-7, Davidson's offense proved to be too mighty, when back-to-back kills from Davis and Albold put the first frame out of reach.

Relying on their momentum from the first, the Wildcats stormed back from an early 4-0 deficit in set two to settle the score at 4-4. After exchanging several leads and the game tied up at 15 points apiece, Davis provided the 'Cats with a clutch kill, along with a monstrous block from Rodriguez and Omonije, that lifted Davidson past the Rams, 25-20, for the 2-0 set advantage.

Despite dropping set three to Fordham, 25-20, the Wildcats strung together a strong, final fourth set to win the match. After falling behind 7-1 in the final frame, Nguyen took the 'Cats on a six-point run from the endline to tie things up at 7-7. From there, the Wildcats relied on scrappy defense and Albold, Davis and Omonije's timely blocking efforts to secure the 3-1 A-10 opening victory.

Davidson will wrap up its three-match home weekend tomorrow afternoon with a 1 p.m. first serve against the Rhode Island Rams. For live coverage, visit davidsonwildcats.com/coverage.
