DAVIDSON — The Davidson women's soccer team threatened multiple times Thursday night, including in the final seconds, but came up short in a 1-0 loss to Western Carolina at Alumni Stadium.
The Wildcats came closest to evening the score when Rachel Schleicher chipped a shot at goalkeeper Melody Mezzina with three seconds to play, but Mezzina made a diving stop to her left to end it.
"We had chances all the way to the end," said Davidson coach Adam Denton. "It's a disappointing result, but we've got to continue to work to turn the corner and turn our positive play into positive results."
Both teams finished with six shots-on-goal, with Davidson holding an 11-9 edge in overall shots and a 6-1 advantage on corner kicks. Shea Bonacci's shot with five minutes to play in the first half was also stopped by a Mezzina dive.
Mary Grace Bunch kept the Wildcats in it with two saves on Rea Syska shots in the 67th and 69th minute.
The Catamounts scored in the fifth minute when Valentine Pursey scored off a cross from Kirsten Hahn.
