DAVIDSON, N.C. -- The Davidson lacrosse team awaits its toughest test yet this weekend, as the Wildcats will face No. 12 Richmond on Friday and VCU Sunday on the road.
The Richmond Spiders have been ranked nationally in each week of the 2021 season, and were predicted as A-10 favorites to win the league among preseason polls.
Richmond will be the Wildcats' third nationally ranked opponent this season, as the two Atlantic 10 teams will fight it out on ESPN+. Complete coverage for both contests this weekend will be available at davidsonwildcats.com/coverage.
ABOUT THE SPIDERS… Ranked as high as 10th at one point this season, the Richmond Spiders enter week 10 ranked 12th in US Lacrosse Magazine's poll, 21st in the IWLCA Coaches Poll and 18th in the Inside Lacrosse poll. The Spiders are 8-1 overall and 4-0 in league play, averaging 37.2 shots and 16 goals per game. Redshirt senior Sam Geiersbach has 33 points on the year and was recently named to the 2021 Tewaaraton Award Watch List, college lacrosse's highest individual honor.
INSIDE THE SERIES… Dating back to 2001, Davidson is just 2-5 against the Spiders. With both wins over Richmond coming from inside Richardson Stadium, the two wins were also decided by just one goal apiece. Davidson last defeated the Spiders 6-5 in 2016 and 10-9 in 2001. Richmond has won the last three meetings against the 'Cats, and average 10.57 goals per matchup.
NOTHING NEW… Meeting ranked opponents is nothing new for this 2021 Wildcat squad. Davidson hosted No. 15 Duke on opening night, falling 16-11, and later defeated No. 16 Virginia Tech 15-8 for the program's first win over a ranked opponent in program history on March 17.
VS. THE RAMS… VCU and the 'Cats have already met once this season, with Davidson taking down the in-conference foe 15-9 inside Richardson Stadium back on April 9. This season, the Rams are 6-8 overall and 2-4 in A-10 play, as they average 12.2 goals per game and 29.6 shots per game. Sophomore attacker Julianne George leads VCU, scoring 28 goals with 22 assists on the year.
BELIEVE IT OR NOT… Wildcat senior Sam Rippley has had an illustrious career with Davidson lacrosse, and this weekend, the midfielder will look to record her 99th and 100th career points. The Colorado native has a team-high 35 goals this season, adding to her career totals of 80 goals and 18 assists. Rippley ranks 57th in the nation and second overall in the Atlantic 10 with 2.92 goals score per game.
SISTER, SISTER… Davidson's sisterly duo, of Julianne Carey and Olivia Carey, has made a splash this season, as the freshman/senior pair has combined for 62 of the Wildcats' 263 total points. With 14 assists from Olivia and 13 from Julianne, the two are among the top-3 with the most assists on the team. With Julianne also grabbing 48 draw controls and seven A-10 Rookie of the Week awards this season, the rookie has garnered the most weekly honors for a freshman in the history of Atlantic 10 lacrosse.
SPREAD THE WEALTH… Davidson's Wildcat trio of Grace Fahey, Erin Cooke and Gianna New have been heating up over the last few weeks, as the three combined for 19 points in last week's win over George Washington. As a sophomore, Cooke has been an unsung hero for the 'Cats this season, recording 4+ points in her last six-straight outings and 17 assists during that span. In last weekend's win over GW, New recorded a career-high seven goals, just one shy of the program's eight-goal record, and Fahey added six goals and an assist of her own.
