RICHMOND, Va. -- The Davidson lacrosse team lost its first contest in over a month, and first conference game of the season, as the Wildcats battled No. 12 Richmond to a 15-11 result inside Robins Stadium on Friday.
Despite the loss, senior midfielder Sam Rippley joined elite company, becoming Davidson's newest member of the 100-point club. Reaching this feat, Rippley had combined for 81 goals a 19 assists in her Wildcat tenure. The Colorado native scored a team-high four points, from two goals and two assists, now bringing her four-year career total to 102 points.
On the day, Richmond out shot the Wildcats just 40-31, but dominated on the draw, 19-9. Davidson was a perfect 16-16 on clear attempts, while netminder Amanda Monahan made 10 saves in goal.
Davidson and Richmond battled back and forth all day, exchanging leads three times and having six tied scores through 60 minutes of play. The Spiders got on the board first with an early 2-0 advantage, before Erin Cooke and Julianne Carey knotted back-to-back goals to tie it up at 2-2. Despite trailing for the majority of the first, a goal from Lauren Arkell at the 12:12-mark allowed the 'Cats to take their first lead of the day, up 7-6. After Arkell, Rippley dished an inside pass to Gianna New who netted her lone goal of the day and gave Davidson the game's largest lead of the day, at 7-5. Richmond turned it on in the final five minutes of the half, and rattled off two consecutive goals of its own to once again tie the game, at 7-7, heading into the break.
The Wildcats were solid to start the second half, scoring three of the frame's first four goals, and took a 10-8 lead with 18:35 left to play. However, from there the Spiders responded and closed out the game on a 6-1 scoring run to ultimately pull away with the four-goal victory.
The 'Cats will turn around and conclude the regular season at VCU on Sunday, at 1 p.m., before awaiting the final tally from the Atlantic 10 Conference regarding the league's postseason tournament. For more information, stay up to date at davidsonwildcats.com.
