'Cats Dominate VCU to Close Out Regular Season

RICHMOND, Va. -- The Davidson Wildcats dominated their A-10 South Division foe in VCU on Sunday afternoon, trouncing the Rams 17-10 to close out the regular season.
Davidson and VCU were evened up on shots, at 31 apiece, but the 'Cats held the advantage on draw controls at a 19-10 clip.
In the win, senior Olivia Carey recorded her 125th career point, while fellow classmate Sam Rippley led the game with four points off four goals. Sophomore Erin Cooke added a hat trick to the score sheet, while netminder Amanda Monahan made nine saves through 60 minutes of work to earn her 10th win of the season. Seven-time A-10 Rookie of the Week Julianne Carey grabbed a game-high and career-high 11 draw controls while adding one goal and one assist to her weekend totals.
The 'Cats jumped out to a fast start, holding a 5-3 lead midway through the first thanks to a goal from Rippley. However, with 11:40 remaining, Emma Johnson kick started a Wildcat scoring surge, as Davidson scored six-straight goals to close out the half and take a formidable 11-4 lead going into the break.
While both teams evened up at six goals apiece in the second half, the 'Cats were an impressive 9-of-10 on clear attempts, and helped cause 15 VCU turnovers to secure the conference victory.
