DAVIDSON, N.C. -- Despite winning the doubles point early on and in gritty fashion, the Davidson women's tennis team had a slow start to their singles matches on Friday afternoon, as Xavier was able to come back and steal the 4-3 victory.

"We definitely made some improvements and got better today," said Head Coach Susanne Depka. "If we can continue to shift our mindset each match, we will be able to close them out and have the W fall in our favor. If we believe in the process and improve each match, I know this will prepare us well for the conference championship."

Although the 'Cats had clinched the first point of the day from the doubles courts, the Musketeers went on to win the first four singles matches right out of the gate, and clinched the match victory.

Sophomore Josie Schaffer led the Wildcats on both ends of the courts, despite the loss, picking up Davidson's first point of the day out of a doubles victory on court one, with partner Elizabeth Truluck. As a duo, Truluck and Schaffer boasted a 6-4 score over Xavier's No. 1 doubles unit. The sophomore then later battled to a three-set victory (6-4, 3-6, 7-5) on court one to win her seventh match of the season.

Court three doubles team Mira Gladstone and Victoria Anyanwu also helped the 'Cats pick up the early duos point, as the two won a convincing 6-4 set that clinched the first point of the day.

Davidson's final point of the day came from freshman Charlotte James, who earned just her fifth career start on Friday afternoon. The Pittsburgh native competed as the No. 6 singles player, and jumped out to an early 7-5 lead in set one, before taking the point on a 6-3 victory in set two. As of today, James in now 2-3 in singles matches in her young career.

The Wildcats will return to play early next week, for a 4 p.m. matchup on Tuesday, April 6 against Gardner-Webb at Davidson.
