DAVIDSON, N.C. -- Despite strong singles showings and tough battles, the Davidson women's tennis team fell 4-3 at the hands of the Gardner-Webb Bulldogs on Tuesday afternoon.
"This was another tough one, but there were some good things to come out of this match," Head Coach Susanne Depka noted. "We played a team that didn't give us anything, and we had to earn it and take it from them. Some players worked through a ton of adversity and I believe in the end it will make them stronger. This will ultimately prepare them for end of season at the conference championships! They just need to start to believe and take confidence from the things they did well."
Although the Wildcats dropped the overall doubles point, Josie Schaffer and Elizabeth Truluck managed to pick up a 6-3 win from the No. 1 doubles slot. As a duo, the sophomore/junior pairing has now gone 2-0 when competing at court one during doubles matches.
On the singles side, Schaffer continued her success and picked up a quick two-set win over GW's No. 1, Ristic Miljana. The sophomore, Colorado native trounced the Bulldog in two 6-1, 6-1 sets to hand the 'Cats their first point of the day.
Alyssa Hahn and Truluck followed Schaffer's success, as Hahn won in two from 6-2, 6-3 results, and Truluck battled to a three-set win. From court three, Truluck fell behind 6-4 in the first, but won the second 7-5. In the deciding third set, the junior squeaked out an 11-9 win and earned Davidson its third and final point of the day.
Despite the loss, the Wildcats will resume play this weekend taking on George Washington and Appalachian State from the Davidson Tennis Courts.
