DAVIDSON, N.C. -- After another strong start on Saturday, the Davidson women's tennis team was stalled in the singles portion of the day by A-10 foe George Washington, as the Colonials crawled back from a 1-0 deficit and went on to defeat the Wildcats, 4-3.
"Today was another tough match today against a solid A-10 opponent," said Head Coach Susanne Depka. "We did a lot of things really well today and definitely improved. We fought hard and competed well. All of these close matches and situations we have been put in, will only help us moving forward. I know the team can take positives from today and get fired up for tomorrow's match!"
Doubles duo Josie Schaffer and Elizabeth Truluck had another solid day from the No. 1 slot. For the third straight week, the two won their match on court one, this time defeating Colonials Bodewes and Wiesemann, in a 6-4 set. Although the Wildcats' court two team fell 3-6, Mira Gladstone and Victoria Anyanwu picked up a 6-4 win on court three that allowed Davidson to take an early 1-0 advantage.
Schaffer and Wiesemann met again in the singles round, battling through three sets from court one. Schaffer won the first 6-4 before falling 5-7 in the second. Later, the sophomore bounced back, taking a commanding 6-2 victory in the deciding set to help the Wildcats to their second point of the match. With the win, Schaffer has now won her last three singles matches, and improves to 9-8 overall on the year.
Davidson's final point of the day would come from rookie Ava Ignatowich on court four. The Florida native picked up a two-set win over GW's Bodewes, winning the first 7-6, after a tiebreaker set, and stealing the second in a 6-2 score.
Despite the strong doubles showing early, and two singles wins, George Washington produced four singles victories down the stretch to take the 4-3 conference win.
The 'Cats will return to action tomorrow afternoon to take on Appalachian State on Senior Day.
