Davidson drops to 6-6 overall on the season and 3-3 in Atlantic 10 play.
DAYTON, Ohio -- Despite a back-and-forth affair in the early goings, a seven-minute, 14-2 run for the Dayton Flyers proved to be the difference maker this evening, as the Davidson Wildcats came up just short of their A-10 foe, 64-58 inside UD Arena.
Adelaide Fuller paved the way for the 'Cats, as the sophomore had 18 points and a career-high nine rebounds. Chloe Welch added 22 points, marking her fourth 20-plus point performance, and 10th in double-digits, this season. Junior Sarah Konstans also grabbed seven rebounds and was +6 on the floor through 23 minutes of work.
Davidson took the lead early, thanks to foul trouble from the Flyers and seven points from Fuller. With five-of-nine shooting through the first five minutes of play, the Wildcats managed to take a 12-6 lead by the first media timeout. However, the Flyers answered right back and rattled off a 12-0 run of their own to take a 16-12 lead by the end of the first quarter.
The 'Cats held Dayton scoreless for three minutes to open up the second frame, and managed to regain the lead after a layup from Welch. The lead would not last long, however, as Davidson and the Flyers exchanged leads four times before Dayton went on its 14-2 run to take a 38-27 lead by the 7:29-mark of the third.
As Davidson entered the final 10 minutes of play trailing by 13, the Wildcats pressed Dayton's offense down the stretch to stir up a fourth-quarter surge. Welch scored seven straight points to make it a 59-48 game, and a free throw from Fuller pulled the 'Cats back within 10. The Wildcats would close out the game with one more rush, this time outscoring Dayton 9-0, while forcing five Flyer turnovers, to cut the deficit to six just before time expired. Despite outscoring the Flyers 20-13 in the fourth, and 33-31 in the second half, Davidson ultimately fell short.
The 'Cats will return to play on Saturday afternoon with a noon tip off against the Saint Louis Billikens from inside Chaifetz Arena.
