Davidson will host Charleston Southern in its 2020-21 home opener.
DAVIDSON, N.C. -- The Davidson Wildcats will tip off their home season tomorrow afternoon, at 4 p.m., as the Charleston Southern Buccaneers come to Belk Arena for just the second time in program history. This meeting will be the fifth between the two opponents, with the first contest dating back to Feb. 12, 1993.
LAST TIME OUT... The 'Cats opened up this season with a heavy slate, taking on No. 12 Maryland, Wake Forest and Florida Gulf Coast in three-straight days during bdG Sports' #BeachBubble. Davidson fell to all three opponents, but averaged 70.0 points and 41.1 rebounds per game.
COACH'S TAKE... "To get exposure to those three teams so early, I think is going to pay dividends for us down the line," said Head Coach Gayle Fulks. "We learned a lot about ourselves and I was really happy to see so many people step up in certain situations. It was a really good three-game stretch."
ABOUT THE BUCS... CSU is off to a 1-1 start this season, picking up a win over NAIA's Columbia International, before falling to Florida, 67-52, in Gainesville. The Buccaneers are averaging 65.5 points per game, led by Alyssia Faye, who averages 16.0 points and 8.0 rebouds per game. The team is shooting 44.4 percent from the floor and was predicted to finish 10th in the Big South this season.
WELCH'S WAY... Junior guard Chloe Welch has had a breakout start to the season, scoring a team and career-high 23 points against No. 12 Maryland and Wake Forest in back-to-back games. The Colorado native scored in double figures for the third consecutive game against Florida Gulf Coast on Nov. 29, and has shot 44.2 percent from the floor overall this season.
NOTABLE... Tomorrow's game will be Davidson's latest home opener since the 'Cats debuted at Belk Arena on December 5 of the 2015-16 season.
A WIN WOULD... With a win over the Bucs, Davidson would move to 5-0 in the all-time series against Charleston Southern. A victory would also be the 'Cats' first this season and make head coach Gayle Fulks undefeated in home openers during her tenure.
TALK ABOUT BALANCE... Despite losing to the Eagles in their last contest, the Wildcats had one of their more well-balanced offensive affairs against FGCU. In the match up, four 'Cats scored in double figures as Chloe Welch led with 16 points, Cameron Tabor notched 14, Peyton Carter added 12 and Adelaide Fuller scored 11. The offensive production marked the first time Davidson has had four scorers in double-figures since Feb, 16, 2020 against Duquesne. Tabor's 11 points also set a new-career high for the sophomore.
INSIDE THE MATCH UP... Davidson and Charleston Southern met for three consecutive years in the 90's, spanning from 1993-95. In that stretch, the Bucs averaged just 55.3 points per game against the Wildcats. Last time out against CSU, on Nov. 11, 2018, now-senior Katie Turner scored a game-high 19 points.
