BOONE, N.C. -- Powered by an electric, 32-point performance from junior Chloe Welch, the Davidson Wildcats (2-3) pulled off a second-half comeback to defeat the App State Mountaineers (2-2), 67-64 this evening.
Welch's 32 points, 18 of which came in the fourth quarter alone, set a new career-high for the Colorado native, and marked the first 30+ point performance by a Wildcat since Suzi-Rose Deegan did so in December of 2019.
The 'Cats and Mountaineers came ready to play a gritty, 40 minutes of basketball this evening, as neither team got on the board until the first minute and a half of play. While App State scored first, Sarah Konstans answered right back sinking a layup in the paint. Peyton Carter got involved in the scoring efforts shortly after, taking the first three-point attempt and making the first three-point basket of her career to tie the game at 5-5.
With six minutes to go in the half, the Mountaineers pulled ahead to a 12-7 cushion, but Welch halted the run with a three-pointer from the far side of the arc. Welch's trey would be Davidson's last of the quarter however, as App went on a 5-0 run to control a 17-10 lead heading into the second.
The 'Cats picked up their offensive movement in the second frame, when Katie Turner grabbed a defensive rebound and travelled coast-to-coast to drain the fastbreak layup and make it a 19-14 game.
Davidson saw its biggest momentum of the half with just under six minutes to go, as Konstans forced an App State turnover and Welch sank a floater from the top of the key to complete an 8-3 scoring run and forced a Mountaineer timeout.
The 'Cats pulled within two of App State after a Cameron Tabor three-pointer, but the Mountaineers eventually extended their lead back to four, heading into the halftime break with a 29-25 lead.
Davidson went on to outscore the Mountaineers, 42-35, in the second half, marking their fourth straight opponent that has been outscored in the final 20 minutes of play.
Cassidy Gould kick started the second half comeback for the 'Cats with a three pointer, followed by a fastbreak layup from Welch off a Turner assist. With the Wildcats trailing 37-32, Welch once again kept the game at bay with a stepback three-pointer.
As Davidson crept in on App State's lead, Turner hit a corner three with three minutes to go in the third, that gave the 'Cats their first lead of the night, 38-37, since the opening minutes of play.
In the final 10 minutes of work, Carter sank a layup and free throw to give Davidson a 45-43 lead. From there, Welch scored the Wildcats' next 18 points to take a 63-62 lead with 1:57 to play. Davidson's defense stifled App State's offense for over two minutes of play down the stretch, allowing Carter and Turner to tally four more points together and secure the 'Cats 67-64 victory in Boone.
Davidson will return to the floor on Tuesday, Dec. 15 to take on the Charlotte 49ers in the Queen City at 6 p.m.
