DAVIDSON, N.C. -- Powered by a career-high, 17-point performance from Cameron Tabor, the Davidson Wildcats clawed their way through a 70-64 victory over East Tennessee State this afternoon. This win marks the Wildcats' third straight, as they end their non-conference slate with a 3-3 record.
Along with Tabor, Katie Turner (11 points), Adelaide Fuller (13 points) and Chloe Welch (14 points) each scored in double-figures. For Welch, today's contest also marks her sixth straight performance in double-figures, and her first career double-double.
The 'Cats got off to a slow start, as their first basket would not come until the 6:08 mark of the first quarter, when Adelaide Fuller sank two free throws to get Davidson on the board. Trailing the Bucs 8-2 early on, Davidson went on an 8-2 run of its own over the next three minutes, to tie the game at 10 points apiece. With three minutes remaining in the frame, senior Kelly Fitzgerald sank two pull-up jumpers from the top of the key and allowed the 'Cats to head into the second frame with a 16-12 lead.
Despite the lead, ETSU started off the second with its own six-point stretch, and pulled ahead to a 22-16 advantage. However, from there, the Wildcats went on a 14-0 run, backed by six points from Tabor, and settled the score at 32-25, in favor of the 'Cats. Fuller would sink one final layup of the half for Davidson, before heading into the break with a 34-33 lead.
The second half would prove to be even more of a back-and-forth affair, as Davidson outscored ETSU by just five points. However, the second half strife proved to be the 'Cats' fifth straight contest where they outscored their opponents in the second half.
Two treys from Turner and one from Sarah Konstans pushed the Wildcats through the third quarter, edging the Bucs by just four points as Davidson entered the final 10 minutes of play, up 51-47.
The final quarter of play saw the Wildcats spread their offense, as Welch and Tabor exchanged three-pointers, along with Konstans, Fuller and Turner knocking down shots towards the end of the contest. With seven made free throws in the fourth, the Wildcats managed to hang onto their lead and defeat ETSU, 70-64.
Davidson will turn things around on Monday morning, as they take on the Fordham Rams in the Bronx at noon.
