Thompson’s Late Strike Lifts ‘Cats Over UMass, 1-0

DAVIDSON, N.C. – Jaylen Thompson scored the game's only goal in the closing minutes to lift Davidson over UMass, 1-0, in Atlantic 10 men's soccer action Wednesday evening at Alumni Stadium.
With their first conference victory, the Wildcats improve to 2-6-2 overall and 1-2-0 in league play, while the Minutemen fall to 4-7-0 and 0-3-0.
Thompson's first score of the 2019 campaign came in the 86th minute, when he beat his defender down the right side and caromed a low strike off the far post and into the back of the net.
Davidson, which out-shot UMass 10-8 and held a 4-3 edge in corners, threatened with a number of scoring chances in the opening half, including two from Jamie DiLuzio and a rip from Mateo Alzate.
Sophomore Lucas Hauth also had an opportunity on the Wildcats' first possession after intermission, but his quick flick deflected off the cross bar and out of play.
For Davidson goalkeeper Sawyer Gaffney, it was his second shutout of the season and ninth of his career.
