DAVIDSON, N.C. – Playing in their final home game of the season, the Davidson women's soccer team battled to a 1-1 draw against visiting VCU on a cold Thursday evening inside Alumni Stadium in an Atlantic 10 matchup.
The tie helped the Wildcats (8-7-3, 3-4-2 A-10) earn a point and keep pace in a very tight race to advance to the A-10 Championships as they came into the night tied for seventh place. The top-eight teams advance to the tournament. The Rams moved to 8-6-3 overall and 2-5-2 in league games.
Comments from head coach Adam Denton
"It was an entertaining game tonight. We got off to a wonderful start from the kickoff and put them on their back foot with the goal just 20 seconds in. We did well for about 10-15 minutes after that before VCU got more into the game and took more control of the possession. We had to make adjustments cause we were under a lot of pressure. We unfortunately gave up a sloppy goal as we didn't get tight enough on a shot and missed clearing out the corner, so that was disappointing."
"Second half we started slowly, but defended well and grew into the game, only to not really do enough with the ball when we had chances. They are a very talented team with several attacking threats and we managed them, with a number of their shots coming from a distance outside the 18-yard box."
"It's a point and with the standings the way there are, any point is better than none. We have to get ready for a big matchup at Fordham on Sunday, as we are in a position we haven't been in before with a chance to be in the top eight. I know the team will give it everything they have when we head up to New York for the game."
Quick Hits From the Game:
•Davidson did not waste anytime getting on the board first, scoring 21 seconds in off a rebound goal from Sabine Chandler from a shot off the foot of Gretchen Pearson.
•Chanlder registered her team-leading fifth goal (personal-best) and pushed her points total to 11, also a team best.
•Pearson's assist gave her a team-high four, which is a personal best.
•The score remained 1-0 until VCU tied it in the 36th minute when Susanna Friedrichs knocked in a loose ball in the goal box.
•The Rams pressured the 'Cats defense all evening, firing off a game-high 21 shots and putting 11 of those shots on goal.
•Davidson had 10 shots and put eight on frame.
•Goalkeeper Mary Grace Bunch had several big stops on her way to a new career high of 10 saves in all 110 minutes. She came up with three of those saves in the second overtime to keep things tied up.
•Corner kicks were 9-1 in favor of VCU.
•The Wildcats finished their home slate of games this year 4-3-3 and earned their first point in the all-time series vs. the Rams.
