DAVIDSON, N.C. — The Davidson men's tennis team gears up for the 2019 Spring season this Friday when they open at home against Boston at 4 p.m. inside the Knobloch Tennis Center.
The Wildcats are facing Boston (14-12 last year) for the first time since 2009 when they scored a 7-0 neutral site match win. The Terriers have a busy week, traveling to Virginia Tech today, Davidson on Friday and then back up to the Northeast to face Brown Sunday.
In anticipation of the upcoming season, below is a quick look at the Davidson Men's Tennis 2019 Season Preview ...
2018 Spring Record: 16-7, 5-0 A-10
2018 A-10 Championship finish: Lost in the semifinals to Dayton 4-3 after scoring the program's first A-10 tournament win in the previous round vs. Saint Louis (4-0).
Key Returners: Junior Axel Fries (14-8 singles record with 10 wins coming at No. 4, 12-7 in doubles, 2018 A-10 All-Second Team & 2017 A-10 Freshman of the Year) ... junior Thomas Mason (11-7 singles record, six of those wins at No. 3) ... sophomore Yash Parikh (4-3 singles record, all four wins came at No. 6).
Key Newcomers: Brooks Green (six-time letterwinner and No. 1 singles player at McGill-Toolen in Mobile, Ala. ... two-time high school All-American and five-time Mobile Player of the Year … ranked as No. 1 in Alabama, top-100 in the nation and a four-star recruit ... Sam Kavarana (2016 Mark Hodgin Junior Sportsmanship Award awarded by United States Tennis Association National Regional Amelia Island … from Charleston, S.C.).
Big Match-ups in 2019: at Virginia Tech (17-8 last year and a trip to the NCAA Tournament) … six matches against former Southern Conference foes including Furman (19-8 last year and reached the SoCon Tournament final) ... five A-10 matches.
What to Watch for: Davidson is coming off back-to-back 16-win seasons with the return of two starters and eight letterwinners. The Wildcats though must replace four seniors who were all starters including Shamael Chaudhry (49 career singles wins, 4-time A-10 All-First Team), David Hager (53 singles wins, 2017 A-10 All-Second Team), Artem Khrapko (52 singles wins, 2-time A-10 All-First Team, 2016 A-10 All-Second Team) and Jack Riazzi (career senior season with a personal-best 14-5 singles mark and added a 10-8 record in doubles matches).
Thoughts From the Coach: Drew Barrett, entering 13th season: "It was another outstanding season last year for us and we were led by one of the best senior classes since I've been here at Davidson. They really set the pace for us and we are going to miss them. All four had tremendous careers, and I was proud of them and their accomplishments. We will be young this season, but the returners all had a great Fall season, so I'm really excited to see them carry that over to the Spring for us. Tommy (Mason) and Axel (Fries) will be looked to carry on some of the leadership, and I'm looking forward to seeing some of our young guys like Yash (Parikh) take the next step after they got some experience as freshmen a year ago. Our pair of freshmen will also look to contribute for us as well."
