DURHAM, N.C. — Sophomore Yash Parikh had a solid showing representing Davidson at the ITA Carolina Regionals over the weekend by reaching the third round in the main singles draw on the campus of Duke, Oct. 12-14.
Joining Parikh over the weekend was Axel Fries and Sam Kavarana.
The sophomore from Tucson, Ariz, opened his strong weekend with a hard-fought 7-5, 7-6(4) win in the first round against Joseph Schrader of N.C. State. In the second round, Parikh scored a 6-2, 7-6(5) victory against Michael Morphy of UNC Wilmington to reach the third round. His weekend ended though there with a 6-2, 6-2 setback to the 15th seed from Wake Forest, Rrezart Cungu.
Fries opened with a win in his first round match against Daniel Belovs of North Carolina, 7-6(4), 6-4, but then dropped a 6-1, 7-5 decision to Luca Keist of Charlotte who was seeded 13th overall. Keist went on to reach the semifinals of the main singles draw.
After falling in his first match (6-2, 7-6) to a player from Clemson, Kavarana came back with a 6-2, 7-5 win in his first consolation match against a player from NCCU. He was forced to retire in his next match, trailing 3-0 to Constandinos Christoforou of Charlotte.
In doubles play, Parikh and Fries teamed up to earn a 7-6(5), 6-2 victory against a pair from UNCG, but had their weekend halted by a duo from N.C. State in the second round, 6-3, 6-2.
Davidson will next be in action at the Charlotte Invitational, Oct. 26-28, for its next Fall event.
