Volleyball Opens 2017 Season in Wilmington, N.C.

DAVIDSON, N.C. -- As the first official week of classes comes to a close, Davidson volleyball readies for its 2017 season, heading to the Springhill Suites Mayfair Invitational in Wilmington, N.C., hosted by UNCW.Â
The Wildcats will face Appalachian State and Loyola (Md.) on Saturday, Aug. 26 before wrapping up the weekend with the Seahawks on Sunday. Live stats will be available for all contests, and live video streaming will be accessible for the Sunday match.Â

2017 AT A GLANCE
The Wildcats are coming off a historic 2016 campaign, where they earned the program's first-ever berth in the Atlantic 10 Tournament. While the losses of dynamic seniors Mikayla Derochie and Emily Franklin- who each left Davidson with multiple enscriptions in the record books- the 'Cats welcome back a strong veteran crew, including the team's leader in kills in senior Kelly Friers (247) and junior setter/opposite Mason Rooney, who recorded three triple-doubles last season.Â
Rooney, along with fellow junior Ciera Cockrell and senior middle hitter Mary Harriet Moore, will captain the 'Cats this season as they look to repeat history.Â
With a significant amount of playing time returning, the 'Cats will use experience and depth to their advantage, while welcoming in four freshmen who could all make an immediate impact.Â
The squad was picked to finish seventh in the Atlantic 10 Coaches' Preseason Poll, while reigning champions Dayton were to chosen to repeat.Â
WELCOME ABOARD
2017 will make the first season for assistant coach Brian Rosen, who has spent last season as head coach of Providence High School and was named Coach of the Year by two different outlets, and has also spent the last nine years as director of the Carolina Juniors. Rosen is a 2008 graduate of South Carolina.Â
Joining him is volunteer assistant Bailey Kernodle, who had a standout career at the The Citadel as an outside hitter.Â
THE COURT BREAKDOWN
"This team has prepared well and is ready to compete. Â Everyone on the team has a "team-first" mindset and wants to succeed. Â I'm looking forward to a challenging weekend, and a tough preseason," Willis said of this year's lineup.Â
Setters
Rooney will take over as the squad's primary setter after logging 352 assists last season. Joining her will be freshman Sydney Champaigne, who helped lead her AAU team to a national title in 2015.Â
Middle Hitters
Moore will look to help fill the void left by Franklin, and she too will be accompanied by a rookie looking to make an immediate impact in freshman Ellie Crosley.
Attackers
Friers and Cockrell will lead the ranks on the outsides, and freshman Remi Lehnertz could also see playing time. Junior Katharine Franz will provide depth as an opposite.Â
Defense
Sophomore Elise Edman will likely return to her role as libero, joined by a wealth of experience in defensive specialists Sam Thompson, Kylie Bishopp, and Josie Treadwell.Â
THE SCHEDULE
After Wilmington, the team will head to Williamsburg, Va., for the William & Mary Invitational. Their first home match will come in the form of the Wildcat Classic, where the 'Cats play host to Georgia, Wofford, and Florida Gulf Coast on Sept. 8-9. Things will kick-off in league action on Sept. 22, when the team plays host to Fordham before wrapping up the weekend with Rhode Island.Â
