WILMINGTON, N.C. – Davidson volleyball welcomed the 2017 season with brooms, sweeping the opening day of the Springhill Suites Mayfair Invitational, edging Appalachian State, 3-2 (24-26, 25-22, 22-25, 25-18, 15-12), and defeating Loyola (Md.), 3-0 (25-21, 25-15, 25-20), in straight sets to cap off the evening.
Senior Kelly Friers finished the day with 25 kills, including recording 19 against App. State, falling one shy of her career-high that she set last season vs. La Salle. Freshman Ellie Crosley delivered a strong debut, finishing the day at a .625 hitting efficiency with 15 kills and 7 blocks. Crosley did not commit a single attack error on the day.
Senior Mary Harriet Moore recorded a career-high, posting nine blocks on the day.
"The team competed and executed at a high level today. We have a few areas to improve on, but I like our effort. Tomorrow will be a great test against UNCW," head coach Chris Willis said.
MATCH ONE: Davidson 3, Appalachian State 2
Davidson had five players with double-digit kills, led by Friers' 19, and junior Mason Rooney collected her first double-double of the season, logging 11 kills and 28 assists.
Despite a six-point sequence in the opening frame and rallying from set point to force extra points, the 'Cats dropped the first stanza 26-24.
App looked to keep momentum in the second set, but Davidson took 8 of the last 11 points, including back-to-back kills from Rooney and senior middle Mary Harriet Moore to ensure the 25-22 victory.
The Mountaineers took the advantage after taking the third set, before the 'Cats clawed back in the fourth, leading by as many as six points, to force a fifth set.
MATCH TWO: Davidson 3, Loyola (Md.) 0
Rooney led the offense with eight kills, and Crosley registered a stellar .887 hitting percentage to pace the 'Cats. Rookie Sydney Champaigne dished out 15 helpers.
Davidson dominated the contest, leading in the opening frame by gaps of nine or more twice.
The second set was in much the same fashion, with the Wildcats holding overwhelming leads at multiple times of the frame.
The Greyhounds battled in the third set, in hopes of continuing the match, going on two separate 4-0 rallies to climb back from a 22-11 deficit.
