Rooney Turns in Triple-Double in 3-1 Setback; Named All-Tournament

WILMINGTON, N.C. – Junior captain Mason Rooney was named to the All-Tournament team as Davidson volleyball (2-1) dropped its Sunday match with UNCW 3-1 (18-25, 26-24, 19-25, 22-25) at the Springhill Suites Mayfair Invitational.
Rooney set a career-high, tallying 20 kills and a stellar .531 hitting percentage to lead the Wildcats' offense, tallying her first triple-double of the season (and fourth in the last two years) after adding 23 assists and 14 digs. Classmate and fellow captain Ciera Cockrell also tallied double-digit kills, recording 12. Rooney finished the weekend at a .313 clip with a team-high 39 kills.
"We played a great match today where both teams competed at a high level. Wilmington made a few more defensive plays than us, and that made the difference," head coach Chris Willis said. "For the weekend, I'm happy with the strides we made, and look forward to getting back on the court and better this week."
The Seahawks held as much as a seven-point advantage in the opening stanza, finishing the frame at 25-18.
Davidson rallied in the second set, using sequences of four straight points on multiple occasions, taking the last four of six points to even the match at one set each.
After UNCW regained momentum by taking the third set 25-19, the two teams battled, forcing 12 ties and five lead changes before the Seahawks ultimately took the match 25-22.
Davidson returns to the court next weekend, traveling to Williamsburg, Va., for the Colonial Classic hosted by William & Mary. In addition to the Tribe, the 'Cats will also face Morehead State and Savannah State over the course of the weekend.
