WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – Davidson volleyball continued to swing a hot attack, collecting their second consecutive Saturday sweep of the 2017 season, dropping just one set on the day. The 'Cats downed Savannah State in straight sets (25-7, 25-16, 25-14) and Morehead State, 3-1 (15-25, 25-15, 25-18, 25-14), on Day One of the Colonial Classic hosted by William & Mary.
Junior captain Ciera Cockrell led the offensive charge, tallying 18 kills across the two matches. Classmate Katharine Franz was closely behind, with 15, and freshman Ellie Crosley continued to shine with an outstanding hitting percentage (.571) and nine blocks.
MATCH ONE: DAVIDSON 3, SAVANNAH STATE 0
After the rookie duo of Crosley and outside hitter Remi Lehnertz registered the first two points of the frame, the 'Cats went on to take the first nine of 10 points for early cushion.
Davidson continued to dominate, recording 15 of the next 18 points to cruise to victory in the opening stanza 25-7.
The Tigers came within two in the second set, but the Wildcats used three separate three-point sequences to build their lead and took advantage of back-to-back Savannah State miscues to seal the win 25-16.
After leading by as many as nine points early in the final set, including a 6-0 rally, the 'Cats went on to secure the sweep, topping off the match with a double block from Cockrell and Crosley.
MATCH TWO: DAVIDSON 3, MOREHEAD STATE 1
Despite beginning the second match at a 9-9 tie, the 'Cats turned sluggish, giving the Eagles a 10-point advantage as they took the set 25-15.
Davidson quickly starting swinging, taking the first seven points of the second set (three courtesy of senior Kelly Friers). Continuing to widen the gap, Cockrell capped off the frame with three straight kills to even the match at one set apiece.
The Eagles battled in Set Three, coming within two points before Davidson went on to rally for five straight to lead 21-14 and take control of the match after winning the set 25-18.
After sequences of five and six straight points, the 'Cats maintained momentum in what was ultimately the final frame, winning 25-14 and taking the set.
Friers and Cockrell each ended the match with 10 kills each, and the Wildcats recorded 10 total blocks (Crosley with six assisted) to dominate the net game.
