WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – After only dropping two sets on the weekend, Davidson volleyball was named the Colonial Classic Champion as the team defeated host William & Mary Sunday 3-1 (21-25, 26-24, 25-23, 25-23) to complete the weekend sweep and move to 5-1 on the season.

Senior Kelly Friers piloted the 'Cats offense, collecting 18 kills on a season-best .389 hitting efficiency. Freshman Ellie Crosley matched her career-best with 10 kills, and junior Ciera Cockrell turned in her second-straight 10-kill match, and her fourth double-digit kills performance of the young season. Junior Mason Rooney recorded 26 assists and 10 digs, registering her second double-double of the year. She also has a triple double on her 2017 resume.

Friers and Crosley were named to the All-Tournament team, while junior Katharine Franz was named Tournament MVP. She finished the weekend with 24 kills and a .370 hitting percentage, adding seven blocks.

For the second consecutive contest, the 'Cats fell behind in the match after dropping the opening stanza 21-25, but after battling through 13 tied scores during the second frame, the 'Cats evened the match at one set apiece, clawing out a 26-24 victory.

Davidson led by as many as six points in Set 3, until the Tribe battled back to a 21-21 mark. Crosley then slammed two quick points in the 'Cats favor, and Rooney then sealed with set with a kill to give the team the 2-1 match lead.

The Wildcats built a lead by as many as four in what was ultimately the final frame, holding a 20-16 advantage. The Tribe refused to go down, picking up back-to-back aces to cut the score to 24-23 before Franz capped the weekend with a commanding kill to give Davidson the 25-23 win and match, 3-1.

The squad will make its 2017 home debut this weekend, welcoming Georgia, Florida Gulf Coast, and Wofford for the annual Wildcat Classic beginning Friday, Sept. 8.
