Volleyball Brings Hot Streak Into Home Opener Friday

DAVIDSON, N.C. -- After claiming the Colonial Classic Tournament crown last weekend in Williamsburg, Va., and entering the week with a 5-1 record, Davidson volleyball will make its long-awaited home debut for the annual Wildcat Classic beginning Friday, Sept. 8 in Belk Arena at Baker Sports Complex.

The 'Cats play host to Georgia, Florida Gulf Coast, and Wofford, with each team playing three matches over the course of the two-day event (Friday, Sept. 8-Saturday Sept. 9). Davidson faces Georgia at 7 p.m. Friday, and then takes on FGCU at noon and Wofford at 6 p.m. on Saturday.

LAST TIME OUT
The Wildcats dropped just two sets en route to the title, led by dynamic performances from a quartet of hitters; senior Kelly Friers and junior Ciera Cockrell each collected 28 kills on the weekend, junior opposite Katharine Franz picked up 24 en route to the tournament MVP title, and freshman Ellie Crosley continued with her strong collegiate debut, totaling 22 kills and a stellar .467 hitting percentage. Friers and Crosley joined Franz on the All-Tournament team.

SCOUTING THE BULLDOGS
Georgia (6-1) has swept each of its opponents with the exception of High Point, who they fell to in four sets in their only loss of the young season. The squad's early success could be a result from a trio of freshmen; rookie outside T'ara Ceasar averages 4.26 kills per set, totaling 81 and fellow outside Rachel Ritchie follows closely behind, tallying 80 kills after recording double-digit slams in all but one match thus far. Junior Anna Kate Karstens leads the Bulldogs net game with 16 total blocks, and freshman Kendall Glover rounds out the rookie trio, topping the squad with 74 digs. Friday will be the first-ever meeting between the two schools.

SCOUTING THE EAGLES
FGCU (3-3) enters this weekend on a three-match skid, most recently suffering a sweep to Miami. Junior Amanda Carroll leads the offense, totaling 97 kills at 4.85 per set. Sophomore Daniele Serrano carries a team and tournament best .431 hitting percentage, boasting 52 kills and is coming off an All-Tournament selection from the Sunshine State Classic last weekend. She also controls the Eagles defense at the net with a squad-best 16 total blocks, including seven solos. Junior libero Karissa Rhoades leads the team with 102 digs. The 'Cats and the Eagles will meet for the first time in program history this weekend.

SCOUTING THE TERRIERS
Wofford will arrive in Davidson on a five-match win streak, including sweeping their last four opponents and winning their last 13 sets. The Terriers enter the weekend with the tournament's leader in kills, blocks, assists, and digs. Sophomore Catie Cronister carries 110 kills, collecting double-digits in all but one contest this season, including a program-record for 28 kills in the Terriers 3-0 win over USC Upstate. Veteran Colleen Reilly posts 20 total blocks, sophomore Lorissa King boats 241 assists, and junior Taylor Gill carries 114 digs. Davidson and Wofford are meeting for the 38th time in series history this weekend, with the Wildcats leading overwhelmingly 30-7. The Terriers took the last contest though, a four-setter in 2013.

UP NEXT
Davidson will head back on the road, making the short trek to cross-county rival Charlotte next Tuesday, Sept. 12, slated for a 7:00 p.m. first serve.
