DAVIDSON, N.C. – Davidson baseball (24-21) will take a weekend off from league action, but still has two tough tests ahead of them this week, traveling to No.3 North Carolina Tuesday before hosting border-rival Winthrop in a special game held at BB&T Ballpark in Uptown Charlotte.
The team is coming off its fourth A-10 series victory of the season, taking two-of-three from Saint Louis. The 'Cats were led Friday by ace Durin O'Linger, who finished his home career with a complete game 6-3 victory. O'Linger allowed his first walk in three games, and fanned five in the win. The team blasted three long balls, courtesy of senior Brian Fortier and sophomores Justin Lebek and Max Bazin. The homer was the first of Bazin's career and only his third-ever extra-base hit.
Saturday, the 'Cats took a 5-1 lead into the ninth inning before suffering a heartbreaking 7-5 loss on Senior Day. Fortier again belted a bomb, totaling three hits in the loss. Junior starting pitcher Josh Smutzer went eight innings, scattering just four hits and allowing just two walks.
The team replied in the rubber match with an early lead, fell behind, then regained control with a six-run fifth inning. Sophomore Eric Jones cranked three hits, while junior Cam Johnson and senior Will Robertson provided the team with back-to-back jacks, ultimately proving essential in the 8-7 victory.

THE SERIES WITH NORTH CAROLINA
Davidson and North Carolina will meet for the 113th time Tuesday. The Tarheels hold a commanding 90-22 lead in the all-time series, but the 'Cats have taken one of the last three contests. In 2015, Davidson picked up its last win over a ranked opponent, edging out the then-No. 21 Tar Heels.
In that contest, the 'Cats took an early 9-0 lead before hanging on for the 12-11 decision. then-freshman Alec Acosta tallied two hits and four RBI and fellow rookie Evan Roberts picked up his first collegiate win with 2.2 innings of relief work.
Slugger Brian Fortier is hitting .500 lifetime against the 'Heels, while fellow senior Tyler Agard comes in with a .333 clip.
THE SERIES WITH WINTHROP
After suffering a rain-induced cancellation in late April, The two teams will meet for the 43rd time this week, with the Eagles holding a 29-12-1 advantage.
The two split their series last year, with the 'Cats winning the first game marathon style 12-10, but dropped the later game 15-6. Then-rookie Max Bazin led the offense, hitting at a .750 clip as he tallied six hits and a .778 OBP in the two games. His classmate Eric Jones was right behind him, also hitting .750 as he went 3-for-4 with a homer. The duo of Brian Fortier and Jake Sidwell each tallied five hits, and Westin Whitmire picked up a save, working an inning of scoreless relief with a strikeout in the victory. Then-sophomore Josh Smutzer also had a solid outing, striking out three over 2.0 innings in the win.
THE WILDCATS RUNDOWN
Last week, their final one at Wilson Field, the veteran duo of Brian Fortier and Jake Sidwell each delivered strong performances. Fortier hit at a stellar .588 clip, knocking three doubles and two homers en route to an incredible 1.118 slugging percentage. Fortier totaled nine RBI after three consecutive three-RBI games, and also scored six times. Sidwell turned in a solid .364 average, collecting four hits and a .417 OBP. In his final at bat at Wilson, Sidwell smoked the ball to center field for his second single of the day. Junior Alec Acosta also had a successful week, posting a .389 average with seven hits and three runs.
Davidson picked up its fourth A-10 series of the year over the weekend, taking two-of-three from visiting Saint Louis. The 'Cats have also taken series from St. Bonaventure (currently in third place), Saint Joseph's (currently in ninth), and La Salle (13th). Davidson took one game each from second-place VCU and fourth place George Washington, despite leading late in both rubber matches.
Although his program-best 20-game hitting streak came to an end Friday night, senior Will Robertson was hit-by-pitch, and then collected a hit in each the Saturday and Sunday affairs to extend his reached base streak to 40 games, only four shy of the school's record (46, Clay Hall, 1994).
SCOUTING THE TAR HEELS
No. 3 North Carolina enters the weekend on a six-game win streak, posting a record of 37-9. The squad boasts five players with above .300 batting averages, led by Logan Wilmoth's .330 clip. He carries a team-best seven homers, and also tops the team with a .541 slugging percentage. Brian Miller and Brandon Riley each lead with 35 RBI. The 'Heels pitching staff enters Tuesday at a combined 2.64 ERA, the lowest team ERA the 'Cats will face this season. They have limited opponents to just a .215 batting average.
SCOUTING THE EAGLES
Winthrop will face Wofford on Tuesday before taking on Davidson. They start the week at 26-18, most recently coming off a sweep of league foe Gardner-Webb and have taken 11 of their last 13. Anthony Paulsen and Mitch Spires each carry an above .300 average at .345 and .343, and are tied for a team-best 57 hits. Babe Thomas tops the team with seven long balls.
