Jacksonville’s First-Half Run Sends Davidson to 15-9 Defeat

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Despite winning the second half battle in goals scored, Davidson was unable to overcome a seven-goal deficit at halftime in falling on the road 15-9 to Jacksonville Sunday afternoon in women's lacrosse inside D.B. Milne Field.
The Dolphins (1-3) used an 8-0 run to erase the Wildcats' one-goal lead in the first half and go up 11-4 at the break, and went on to secure the win. The two teams were playing each other first the first time since 2012.
Freshman Genna Portner netted a season-best four goals and Annie Brockett pushed her season total to a team-best 15 with three scores to help pace the offense for Davidson (2-2).
Shayne Antolini registered her first three collegiate assists and Christine Molinari added two.
Jacksonville had seven players score, led by Danielle Della Rocca's five goals and Courtney Valdez's four to go with two assists. Parker Day added two goals, while Hannah Wilcox had a team-high three assists.
Davidson tied things up early at 2-all on back-to-back scores from Portner and Brockett off assists from Antolini. Portner added another goal at the 23:23 mark for a 3-2 lead before the Dolphins tied it up less than a minute later.
Brockett would give the 'Cats their final lead at 4-3 on a free-position goal, but Valdez sparked the game-changing run with a goal at the 13:35 mark. She added one more score during the spurt and Danielle Della Rocca scored three times in the run.
Nicole Pettiglio tried to sparked the Wildcats' offense on a comeback to start the second stanza with a goal a minute and a half in to make it 11-5. Portner and Shannon Blee followed with goals at the 22:36 and 20:04 marks to get Davidson within 11-7.
Jacksonville answered by scoring four of the next five goals to seal up the victory. Portner and Brockett each scored the last two goals for Davidson.
Both teams tied with 13 groundballs each, but Jacksonville won the battle in shots (43-24) and draw controls, 16-9.
Defensively, Rose Woolson and Dana Stasieluk split time in goal and finished with 18 saves combined, 11 of them by Woolson. It was Stasieluk's first game of the season.
Pettiglio and Antolini tied for team high honors in draw controls with three apiece and five players caused one turnover each. Rachel Hianik and Lindsay Rufolo scooped up two groundballs each.
Davidson returns to Richardson Stadium for its lone home contest of the month against Campbell this coming Sunday, March 12.
