Late Goal Lifts Campbell over Davidson, 9-8

DAVIDSON, N.C. — In a tightly contested game across the board, Davidson saw Campbell break a 7-all tie with two goals in the final five minutes and hang on in a 9-8 defeat for the Wildcats Sunday afternoon at Richardson Stadium in women's lacrosse.
The 'Cats tried to force overtime, getting a Nicole Pettiglio free-position goal with 29 seconds left in regulation to make it 9-8. But, the ensuing draw control went to the Camels and they ran out the clock. They had scored the game-winner with 52 second left to make it 9-7 at the time.
Pettiglio finished with two goals and Christine Molinari had a season and team-high three points on two goals and an assist. Annie Brockett, who came in leading the 'Cats with 15 goals, scored once and added an assist.
Campbell (2-4) saw three players score twice each, as Mackenzie Koeller, Melissa Placek and Sam Carey led the way. Placek scored the game-winner off an assist from Kayla Reilly, who had two helpers on the afternoon.
Both teams tied on clear attempts at 17-of-19 and had six saves each, while the 'Cats had advantages in shots (22-21) and groundballs (21-15). Campbell had a 10-8 edge on draw controls and was 3-of-5 on free-position attempts.
Genna Portner put Davidson (2-3) on the board first with her ninth score of the season at the 27:15 mark of the first half. It was short lived as Campbell went on a 3-0 run over the next several minutes to go up 3-1.
Later, back-to-back scores from Sophia Sgroi and Molinari would tie things up at 4-all. Pettiglio capped off the first half with a goal thanks to an assist from Brockett with 27 ticks left to again tie things up, this time at 5-all going into the break.
From there it was a back-and-forth second half with Davidson twice taking one-goal leads of 6-5 and 7-6. The final lead came thanks to Brockett's goal at the 15:10 mark before three straight goals by Campbell made it 9-7.
Rachel Hianik had a strong day on defense, scooping up a career-high six groundballs and tying her personal-best with two caused turnovers. Mackenzie Sivilli also had two caused turnovers, while pulling in a season-high three groundballs and two draw controls.
In goal for the Wildcats was Rose Woolson, who was credited with four groundballs, a caused turnover and six saves.
Davidson finishes out the month of March on the road with a three-game swing starting next Sunday at Winthrop for a 2 p.m. game.
