VALPARAISO, Ind. – Junior wide receiver Cam Cheuvront posted a career day, hauling in seven catches for 135 yards and two touchdowns, but Davidson fell in its Pioneer Football League opener at Valparaiso Saturday at Brown Field, 24-20.
The 'Cats got out to a fast start once again, scoring on each of their first three possessions. Davidson has scored on its first series in each of the last three games.
Junior place kicker Trevor Smith connected on field goals from 39 and 34 yards out to help keep pace with the Crusaders early, who put a touchdown on the board in their second series.
Davidson opened the second quarter with a quick three-play series that ended with a 60-yard scoring strike to Cheuvront, his first of the day. Junior quarterback Taylor Mitchell found Cheuvront over the top of the secondary 20-yards out and the Somerset, Ky., native pulled away for the score.
Valpo opened it up with three consecutive scores to take a 24-13 lead, scoring the final touchdown late in the third after a Davidson fumbled pitch. The touchdown broke a streak of four straight punts, two from each team, to open the half.
On the ensuing drive, the Crusaders again playing stingy defense, forced a Davidson punt, but a late hit on senior John Cook drew a roughing the punter penalty, giving the 'Cats new life. Davidson capitalized, capping a 10-play, 65-yard drive with a six-yard touchdown toss, again to Cheuvront, to bring it back within a possession, 24-20.
The 'Cats would get one more shot and used up 3:44 of clock on 23 plays, but an 11-yard sack of Mitchell back in Davidson territory forced yet another punt from Cook and the Crusaders took over with just under six minutes of game clock left. Valpo went on to rush for a pair of first downs and drain the clock, sealing the victory for the Crusaders.
Davidson sophomore linebacker Boo Jordan got to the quarterback for the third consecutive game, sacking Ryan Clarke 1.5 times for 13 yards loss. The Hagerstown, Md., native recorded five tackles, four of them solo stops, and has amassed 5.0 sacks on the season.
Sophomore defensive back Cody Mitchell and senior linebacker James Gessner each tallied six tackles apiece to lead all Wildcats. Freshman Bryce Perry-Martin helped out on five tackles and assisted Jordan on a sack.
The Wildcats return home Saturday, Oct. 1 for a homecoming game showdown with Stetson. Kickoff from Richardson Stadium is slated for 1 p.m.
