DAVIDSON, N.C. – Stetson wide receiver Kegan Moore's third touchdown reception of the day with 1:07 left was the difference as Davidson fell in Pioneer Football League action at Richardson Stadium Saturday afternoon, 31-27.
Moore erupted for 151 yards off eight receptions and the three scores to lead the Hatters.
With the loss Davidson falls to 2-3 overall and 0-2 in PFL play, while with the win Stetson improves to 2-2 and picks up it's first league win.
Despite the loss, Wildcat senior safety Jaylen Mize had his hand in three Stetson turnovers, forcing a pair of fumbles and picking off Gavin DeFilippo deep in the endzone.
The Wildcats turned the Hatters over five times in the game, including freshman Rayshawn McCall's first career interception.
Trailing 10-7 at halftime, Davidson came firing out of the break, scoring a pair of touchdowns in the opening five minutes. Freshman quarterback Stockton McGuire took the second play of the half himself, going 72 yards down the center of the field for the go-ahead score. The 'Cats made it a two-possession game with a five-yard Nick Nolting touchdown reception at the 10:13 mark.
The Wildcats held the 21-10 advantage into the fourth, but that's when Moore took over, scoring a pair of touchdowns to put the Hatters back up, 24-21 with 9:13 to go.
Davidson turned to junior quarterback Taylor Mitchell, who promptly rushed up field for a 37-yard gain down to the Stetson 26-yard line. The play set up freshman running back Keylan Brown's second scoring scamper of the day from three yards out.
McGuire led the ground assault with 102 yards and two touchdowns, while throwing for another, but threw two interceptions. Junior wide receiver Jaris Scott hauled in six catches for 80 yards with a long of 33.
Junior's Ben Rowell and Ryan Samuels paced the defense with six tackles apiece. Rowell also found some green space as a returner, taking four punts back 80 yards including a 51-yard return that was only stopped by the Stetson punter.
The 'Cats, who lead the PFL in rushing defense with 116.0 yards allowed per game, held the Hatters to 116 yards on the ground.
The Wildcats return to action Saturday, Oct. 8 when they travel across the country to battle San Diego. Kickoff is slated for 4 p.m.
